use the scale on the back of the dog food bag to determine by weight how much you dog should eat usually measured in cups. weather will sometimes play a role in how much he eats; i.e. if it's hot, dogs, especially big dogs, will eat less and when it's cold vice versa. also, if you give your dog treats be sure to take some of his normal food away to account for the extra calories he takes in from the treats. finally, remember that some breeds like labs will gorge themselves if you offer too much food thereby getting fat so it's best to stick with the recommendations on the back of the dog food bag and adjust a little if your dog has noticable gains or losses in his weight.

Definitely not 4 cups of food ... he'd weigh a ton! My English Springer Spaniel gets 2-3 cups of food a day and she is much bigger than a King Charles. You will have to adjust for the individual dog. The amount to be given on the dog food bag is sometimes too much for one dog, but just right for another. Do not overfeed! Are you feeding dry or canned; Science Diet, Iams; Eukanuba or just something from Wal-Mart? Buy good stuff and you will have a healthier dog. I would try feeding your dog about 1 3/4 cups a day and see how that works out. You can cut back or increase if you need to. If you have a puppy, feed it three times a day; an adult dog should be fed twice a day.

The way we've trained puppies in the past is to encourage them to go on a newspaper near to where they sleep at night. Then day by day move the newspapers closer to the back door. This has an effect of teaching them that the back door is connected with them wanting to go. Leave the newspapers by the back door for about a week, then move them just outside the door. Your puppy should then become a little agitated that the newspapers are not there. Once you open the door your puppy will see the newspaper and hopefully start using it outside. After around another week move the newspapers to a more suitable area in the garden. After a little time your puppy will learn to only go outside and the newspapers won't be needed anymore. Don't forget to give plenty of praise. I hope this helps you. We had a Cavalier King Charles and he was adorable - we miss him. We now have a Bichon Frise and she's a crazy little thing - a white, fluffy whirlwind! Good luck to you.

enough to keep it at the right weight. The question cannot be answered in any other way as it depends on the age of the dog, whether it has been neutered, how much excersize it gets etc. What would be the correct amount for my cavalier, might not be the right amount for your dog since mine is very active all day long running about with the other dogs on my land. If she was a normal pet dog getting taken for 3 short walks a day, she would look like a barrel.

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.

I used to give mine 1 mug of dried food a day. They are only small dogs. Look at the side of the packet it will tell you its about 90gms a day for that size. They are usually under 10K in weight.

If the dog is over 12 months old, he should have as much as he will eat in 10 minuutes, twice per day..
If under 12 months, as much as he will eat three times per day.

the amount will depend on what brand and what quality of food you are feeding him, so there is no set measurement. the better the food quality, the less food they need.
