Until i got older, i never even realized that i was having them. My grandma always called me "anxious" and my step father a "scardy cat". All the while though i was having panic attacks and no one back then knew. It usually begins with a throbbing in your chest, sweating, fast respirations or breathing and a feeling of impending doom or fear. Anything can trigger them, not just dangerous situations or places. It can also be a sign of a chemical imbalance, not as weird as it sounds. Sometimes with me i would think of balancing my checkbook and freak, or just going to church and thinking of my clothes and hair. Most people have them and just pass them off as nothing. I use breathing exercises and just think of a plan to follow to keep my mind busy until it passes.

I've had a few panic attacks in the last year. They are scary, and as you realize what's happening, it worsens the symptoms. You should talk to your doctor about them. There is usually some underlying reason you are having them, like increased stress in your life. When you have a panic attack, try talking to yourself. Remind yourself that this will end. Most panic attacks last about 20 - 30 minutes unmedicated. Force yourself to take deep breaths and think about a place or time where you felt content and secure and focus on that. Plan these things ahead of time so you don't have to think of a plan at the time. For me the answer is sitting on my couch in front of my woodstove with my husband sitting near and holding my hand. I focus on the warmth of the fire, the touch of his hand, and breathing in and out, and in, and out.... It's far more common than you would ever imagine.

When I have panic attacks my heart races and pounds, I feel like I cannot breathe, and that I am going to die. It feels, for some reason, like I am flipping over backwards even though I know I am not. I feel intense fear in my body and mind. I know it sounds totally irrational but that is how I feel. It is completely miserable . I take a lot of psych meds and many of them help with the panic and anxiety. But specifically for the anxiety , I take Klonopin.

my boyfriend gets them sometimes, we dont have to be doing anything, once just lying down to go to sleep. he says he feels like hes going to die, hes not going to of course, but, i guess they are pretty scary. He sweats and gets real sick. im not sure of the cause, i just know they are not fun!

I used to have them more often then I do now. I barely have them now. When I have them, no matter the severity, they are always always scary.
