My husband is in the Marines we are going to be stationed at Camp Pendelton CA, (we currewntly live in EL Paso TX) I want the military to move our stuff for us, He wants to do it "ourselves" cause the will reemburse us "eventually" or to hire a moving company! (the moving company wants almost $2000! wow thats alot of $$$) My husband claims that if the military moves our stuff it will take forever to get to us! Is that true?!? What do you think is better to do it ourselves (meaning By myself) or have the military move it for us?!?!? i dont know if this is relevent but all we have to move is 1 queen size bed frame and matress set, 2 toddler beds and matresses, a microwave, washer and dryer, 2 tvs a computer desk and computer and 3 lg boxes of clothers and 5 lg boxes of toys and 3 med boxes with other junk! either way I am driving up there! thanks a bunch for any advice!!!

If you had the military move your stuff how long did it take to get to you?!?!?

You're not going overseas, so it's not likely your things will be put into storage.

It should take less than a week.

Let them pack and move you. It's a WHOLE lot easier. I promise!

There are pros and cons to both. If the government pays for a mover to do it, everything is done by them. You will only have to wait a short time to get your household goods after arriving. And, anything that is damaged, will be reimbursed (to a degree) by the government.

If you do the move yourself, you will be reimbursed for the rental of the truck, and the mileage. I believe (I could be mistaken) that there is also an additional monetary benefit because of the cost savings to the government. The downside is this: You do all the work, and if something is damaged, it's all on you.

on average it is going to take 1 to 2 month for you to get your stuff with a GOV. MOVE. and then there is the possibility you will have to replace who knows how much stuff do to damage or or loss. there real bad about that. i did a full ditty move when i left the navy in 2002, i was reimbursed on my next pay day. i would suggest doing a full ditty move.the thing with this is it comes out of your pocket till reimbursed and has a few rules that go with it.go to the local transition office and they will have a copy of everything you will need, but i', not sure if you can do it more than once.

It won't take forever to get your stuff..at most.. maybe 2 weeks.

DITY moves are tough.. while it is possible to make money on one, you are doing allthework ytourself.. packing, weighing the vehicles empty and full, and you only get reimbursed 80% of what it would cost the MILITARY to move you, NOT what it would cost you to do it yourself. So unless you have a big truck that allof your stuff will fit in, chances are, you won;t make much money, if any at all.

From El Paso to Pendleton will only take a couple of days. I certainly wouldn't move it yourself banking on the sweet ditty move cheque. You'll likely lose money on that deal. Quick math lesson: in a ditty move, the military only pays 80% of what it owuld have to pay a moving company. Also, the army still owes me for a ditty move they forced me to execute in Germany, more than 2 years ago.

Did one move myself and one move by movers that the military contracted with. On the move I did, they let me "draw" money up front for the truck, gas, etc. Then we loaded up the truck and off we went. Got to the new quarters, moved in, returned the truck, and submitted the paperwork. Yes, we got additional money for savings but I don't remember how much. The move that the military contracted with took forever and a day. Some stuff was damaged that they refused to pay for stating that we couldn't prove it wasn't in that condition before it was moved. For such a short move, I would suggest do-it-yourself.

going from El Paso to where you are going is a door to door move and shouldnt take longer than a week IF THAT.. I wouldnt do a DITY, you arent reimbused 100% of the cost usually. We have only done1 DITY and would never do it again and we have PCS'd 10 times..

if you want to make money on the move do it yourself, but the moving company with do it better, and you can also make sometings ready for delivery when you get there, and then they'll put the rest in storage until you find a place to live, instead of you have to do all the work

Get a UHual and move it yourself.

Keep good records and all reciepts and you will get reimbursed quickly.

Do you know where you will be living? Have a plan on what you will do with your stuff before you leave TX.
