nature is anything not man made, so you have many options, i would choose something you like and would enjoy looking at,,, the ocean,, people,,,, flowers,,, etc,, or one idea, is the seasons,,, start with one, move around to another,,,,,,, you could feature one object, such as a tree,,,,, and how it looks during all 4 seasons

Hi:

Do you want to make real art, or something that looks good and is functional? If it were me, and I was trying to make art, I might cover it with dirt. I'd probably cover the piece with a base coat of some paint, and then get a strong adhesive and sprinkle loose dirt on it sort of like glitter. I'd try to build it up and make it look pretty grungy, and then maybe seal it with like a polyurethane. I'd probably try this out on a test board before to make sure it would work like I'd want.

You might also to try to incorporate it into a tree since the chest is probably made out of wood. That might be sort of interesting. Again, I would probably draw sketches first, and maybe do some samples to make sure of what I was doing before trying the final. Another thought, my hubby made a cool little shed for a client a few years ago that was covered with pretty even sections of willow twigs in a sort of herringbone pattern. Something like that might give you some ideas, and if you would want to do something similar, you could probably split the twigs down the middle to make a flat surface, and then adhere the flat side to the piece of furniture with something like hot glue. You could use almost any stick type of material, like bamboo might be nice like that too.

What's the main theme of the class - is it for real fine arts or decoration? Maybe that will help you decide how you want to approach this piece. If you can only use paint, you might try some faux painting techniques and paint this like it might be made out of something like marble. (That might be a nice opposite thought, because it wasn't natural, but it looked like it.) Whatever you finally decide to do, put your heart and soul into it and try not to worry about making a grade, and it will be art. If you fall in love with doing this project, it's possible it might become a career for you.

You might check out DIY and click on their craft projects, and look for painted furniture. You might also check out a magazine called Veranda. It has some sort of high end decorating stuff, but there might be some furniture or other things to give you ideas.

Hope this helps, and if you need more suggestions or have clarifications on your project, please add some comments or ask another question. I would love to see what you come up with, too.

Love the piece. Looks like it's calling out for an English Garden theme...lots of different wildflowers.

I like your dresser! I would paint it as a whole piece, like it is one canvas. I love flowers - how about Peter Max type 60's flowers? Very bright colors and modern. He was great. Check out this website:
