he's just having a laugh, pay no attention to him, make fun of him if you want, at the end of the day, it's just harmless banter!

I think that he's just being immature and insensitive, although he probably doesn't even realize it.
You can either ignore him and hope he'll calm down or if it's being too hurtful, and despite your warnings he keeps going on about it, you need to answer back with something which will hurt big time and which will make him think twice before opening his mouth in the future.

My wife used to do the same thing. After one session where she mercilessly ran me down in front of our friends, (conveniently forgetting her own shortcomings) I told her simply - the My Stupid Husband Story you told today was the last, or the second-last one you will ever tell. It'll be the last if you realise just how smug, arrogant, pompous, obnoxious and hurtful I find your habit of slagging me off in front of my friends and you'll stop doing it, or it'll be the second-last because you'll do it again in spite of what I've told you. In that case every subsequent one will be a My Stupid Ex-Husband Story. Your decision.
It worked. She is now my ex-wife.

I'm sure he is just messing around but like most guys he just does not know when to stop.
Its up to you to tell him this gets under your skin and to stop it now or risk loosing you due to his immaturity. I'm sure after you say that he will shut up.
Good luck xxx

Men do make fun. My hubby does but no harm in it. Get even and make fun of him where it really hurts.
