I have never made a bow personally. However, I read a Survival book once called "Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills" by John & Geri McPherson. I think you can find it on amazon.com.

They have about 45 pages dedicated to making bows and arrows from wood and animal products.

They recommend using Osage Orange, white Oak, or Hickory for bows. They also say Ash, Black Locust, Lemonwood, and Mulberry will work if available.

The authors go into a ton of detail. I haven't tried to make a bow myself, but I felt their instructions and information about the physics of bows was excellent.
