I have about $3000 I'm willing to spend, no more. And I seen just about every tv and heard about every sales pitch I can take. Some told me that HDTV's only come in two types, plasma's or lcd's. I heard not to buy a plasma, get an lcd, but at least 1080p. Then I saw an DLP with 1080p and another guy said that was better. Then I saw a Samsung 61 inch, 1080p lcd tv but it was a projection tv. What is and projection tv? Then a guy told me to stay away from projection tv's.... Someone else was explaining what to look for if I wanted to hook my tv up to my computer !! Can someone please help me? I'm more confused now than before I went to the store. I don't know what I want? I guess I want the best HDTV i can get for about 3000 dollars. I don't care if it's 720 or 1080p, lcd or dlp or scdtv i saw too. Plasma or projection. Can someone help me figure out this madness? Or at least recommend some good name brands or key words to look for? For an HDTV, at least 50 inches or better. THANKS......

check out consumer reports. I saw an issue and they said failure rates on lcd and plasma were about the same(only 3%) where the projection tv's were about 10%. Projection tv's usually don't have the viewing angle the lcd's and plasmas, projectors usually have a darker picture is viewed from the side. You shouldn't have any problem as long as you stay away from wal-mart. Hitachi, sony and magnavox make excellent sets. RCA would have been on the list except that I had a RCA LCD(32 inch) from wal-mart and I took it back because of programming problems, stay away from ILO(sold mainly at wal-mart)

Here's the breakdown for you:

Projection TV's -
Pro's: Inexpensive, large screen.
Con's: Bad viewing angles, needs a bulb replacement every 3 years, large size (Housing, not screen.) so they're not wall mountable.

Plasma TV's -
Pro's: Cheaper than LCD, thin, good brightness in dark rooms, best contrast ratios.
Con's: Some Plasma TV's are susceptible to "burn-in" (Where a shadow of an image will remain burnt in to the screen permanently.), more fragile than others, unable to be repaired, no longer being manufactured by a lot of companies, shorter life spans.

LCD TV's -
Pro's: Thin, best sharpness & brightness, last longer than Plasma & DLP, best selection.
Con's: Contrast not as good as Plasma, unable to be repaired, harder to find in larger sizes.

My opinion:
I'm personally in favor of LCD's due to picture quality, longevity, and overall build quality.

As far as which one to go for, the new Sharp lineup are fantastic. You say you're looking for 50" or above, but that will get pretty pricey in LCD's. I know the 46" can be found for around $3000 or less, and is still a huge screen size. (Model is Sharp LC-46D62U) It also supports 1080p.

The other TV I'd reccommend is the Sony Bravia XBR2 LCD. It's got great picture quality, but is terribly, terribly overpriced.

As far as companies to stick with, I recommend the following:
Sharp
Samsung
Panasonic
Mitsubishi (For DLP's)
And to a lesser extent, Sony. (Pretty much only the XBR2 TV though. I'm not a big fan of their other TV's.)

Hope this helps you out - I strongly recommend the Sharp 46D62U, so I'd recommend researching that one at least. Great TV.

Good luck!

There is no best kind - all are compromises. You see what is out there and narrow down your choices based on what is important to you.

Such as 1) $3000, 2) 50 inch HDTV , 3)has to be able to hook up to computer
etc, etc...

I'd also recommend reading reviews or magazines like consumer reports

I would stay away from brands you never heard before or are store brands.

Das Leben ist nun mal kein schönes Märchen ...und sie lebten bis ans Ende ihrer Tage. Tja, leider kann guy nicht im Voraus sagen wie es sich entwickeln wird und die Kristallkugel ist verschmiert. Auf replaced into willst guy eigentlich vertrauen?
