Three men go into a hotel and ask for a room. The man behind the counter says it's $30 for a room. Each man takes out a $10 bill and hands it to him, then they go to their room.

A few minutes later, the guy at the counter realizes he overcharged the three men. The room is actually $25. He hands the bellhop $5 and tells him to refund the three men.

The bellhop decides to take advantage of this. Three guys, five bucks...they couldn't easily split the money anyway. So he pockets $2 and gives each man $1 back.

Thus, each man paid $9 for the room for a total of $27. The bellhop now has the remaining $2. $27+$2=$29, not $30.

Where did the other dollar go?

Three businessmen were on a trip. They were tired and needed a place to stay for the night. One of the hotels they passed were offering a $30 a night special for one room. The businessmen thought that it would be wise to split the $30 and stay together.

The businessmen each paid the hotel clerk $10 a piece and headed up to their room. Moments later, the clerk realized that the hotel had a special that night of $25 a room, so he sent his assistant up with a $5 rebate all in $1 bills.

Once the businessmen answered the door, the clerk’s assistant realized that he couldn’t split the $1 bills evenly among the three and started to head back down to get change. The businessmen stopped him and said, “How about you give us each $1, leaving yourself a $2 tip?” After thanking the businessmen, the clerk’s assistant went on with his business, $2 richer.

The men returned to their beds, and being businessmen, they were happy to only be $9 in the hole instead of $10.

But they paid $9 each, which is $27, and the clerk had $2. Add 27 + 2, and you get 29 - where's the extra dollar?

Answer:
The instant before the assistant enters the room you have $30 paid by the businessmen, and $5 in the hand of the assistant. 30+5 = 35. Where did the extra 5 dollars come from?

Of course, the money in hand of the assistant is a refund; it’s negative. 30 + (-5) = 25, the real cost of the room. That is the real equation. So, after the money exchanges hands the formula becomes:
- Money paid by businessmen: 9 * 3 = 27
- Money in hand of assistant: 2
- Total: 27 + (-2) = 25.

In other words, the formula (money paid by businessmen) + (money in hand of assistant) is incorrect. The correct formula is (cost of room) = (money paid by businessmen) - (money in hand of assistant)

yeah, megan got the story right, but its not a mathematical flaw, its just telling the story in a certain way. There is no extra dollar, they paid 30, the manageer gave the guy 5, they got 3 back, and the bellhop kept the extra 2
