They can take your car right out from under you. While you are driving it. With your kids in the back seat. They'll give you and your kids a free ride in a police car and drop you off at the closest pay phone. You get to stand and watch as your car is put on a flatbead and impounded. Then you get to bum rides until you can register it and pay the impound fees.

There are several issues here.
If it is not registered is it at least insured? Sometimes you can not insure an unregistered vehicle for moving accidents. (If it is hit while parked that is one thing, but if it is being driven illegally that is something else and some insurance companies have exclusion clauses for such things).
If it is not covered by insurance, one obvious problem is that you can lose your DRIVERS license as well as the registration issues
But.. if it is unregistered, at the discretion of the officer he can either give you a ticket, or have the car impounded so that it can not be driven further. If there is no insurance this latter option is almost a sure bet. A simple month or so out of date will likely just get you a ticket.
A fix-it ticket is pretty easy.. prob. around $50 or so depending upon your jurisdiction and the court costs. For the impound figure at least $200 plus $30 or so each day.
Bottom line.. get it registered or get it off the street (you won't get a ticket if it is sitting on private property).

Did you get your notice to renew? Listed on each notice are the penalties according to how much time elapses after the due date. As for the vehicle tags, the police or CHP usually won't stop you until 2 months past your due month. They are just too busy. Obey the rules of the road, and borrow the money to pay for your registration if you don't have it. Better to be safe than sorry.

Hopefully, you have sent in your renewal and have a canceled check or other proof, you are obeying the law by paying the "renewal tax" for the privilege of driving in California. In NYS, renewals are ONLY by mail and the renewed registration -- 8 out of 10 times arrives after registration sticker on the windshield has expired.

You will get a "fix it ticket" that requires you to fix (or in your case register) the car within a certain amount of time. I got one once. I remember the expensive part was renewing my registration. When it is expired it gets expensive, and it keeps going up all the time.

i "heard" that they can tow your car. but here's a story:
i got pulled over and was cited for that. there was no price on the ticket itself, so before the court date, i went to the DMV, showed them my expired registration papers, and they gave me an extension sticker that you put on the back window. went to traffic court 5 days earlier than the deadline, waited for 2 hours, showed them my renewed registration, and all i had to pay was 10 bucks. the reason for only paying that was because it is under the category of "correctible violation," meaning you can fix the problem before the deadline. i wasn't sure if they made a mistake or anything so i didn't argue. since i was expecting to pay a couple hundred bucks, i went to celebrate.
