This would be someone like a co-worker or the technician at the vet's office. Do you bounce right back and address it or do you stand there and analyze whether or not you've really been spoken to badly. Give examples if you want.

It really has nothing to do with you .... it is not your fault. The person is having a bad day or going through a rough spot.

Don't do anything. Just step back and go away. They will recover their composure and probably later apologise to you.

Don't doubt it: you have been spoken to badly!
But, these things happen. Usually the person who was so nasty will feel just as bad as you if not worse. It will clear....at least it does for me.
And if it does not, just ride with the waves. There are some people I can't get along with and I simply avoid them. I once refused to speak with a co-worker for an entire year.. It was really nice because you had to walk on eggs around her anyway.... you could hardly say anything without her taking exeption to what you said. Later we did make friends again.... rather frosty friends, but
friends nonetheless. I think she was worried about her daughter.

Sometimes people can't manage crisis and they just take it out on anyone who crosses their path. Other people have better social skills. In any case, don't take it personally, it was not meant for you. You just happened to be in the way.
I offer you my sympathy ... it is not easy to deal with such things.

What i do when treated shabbily in a store or any business establishment, is get a name of a higher up. Then a web site and an email if possible. Then I start finding my way to a human that will be able to come down hard on an employee that annoys a PAYING customer, and especially one who has taken the time to do this. Many persons have been fired due to my doing this. I do not tolerate being treated badly by hired help.

If they're just randomly grouchy, I let it go without comment, and try to act better than they are. The view from the moral high ground really is quite lovely. Quite often, if I do that, they change their tone, and if they don't, they look like an *** to all bystanders.

If they're making cracks about me specifically though- that I won't allow. I'll report it to their manager, or call security, whatever's appropriate. If it reaches the point of verbal abuse or harrassment, there's really nothing you can do besides end the situation however you can.

Mock them. Or get them annoyed.

Example 1:
Person: You are SO stupid.
You: I am SO hurt.
Person: You should be.
You: You should be.
Person: Why should I be?
You: Why should I be?
Person: Grow up
You: I want my MOMMY!

Or kill them with kindness

Example 2:
Person: You are REALLY stupid
You: I know. It feels like everyone is smarter than me. But I'm working on it!
Person: You won't succeed
You: Don't say that! You'll get my self-confidence down!
Person: Exactly.
You: Oh, I get it. You are trying to stop me from being arrogant and egotistical! Thank you!
Person: Ooooookay. Freak.
You: I don't like to think of it as freak. I call myself shocking and unique!
Person: Whatever.

I tend to get nasty and snotty right back or I will say "What did I do something to you in another life cause I know I haven't in this one."

I look at them with a look of intense interest and a big smile and inquire with, "Do you enjoy working here", "How's your day going" or comment that, "There are other jobs available if you don't like this one"

i try ignore it. There´s really no point in trying to address the situation because the other person obviously has a problem with you/himself/the world/whatever.
