She has black carpet and wants to paint the walls and ceiling black (I said no to the ceiling.it stays white). She also wants to put green, yellow and orange handprints all over it. I don't know if they would show up good over the black though.

Get her neon paint for the green, yellow and orange paint. Also, get her a blackout screen for her window. and get her a black light bulb. When she turns all her lights off and turns the black light on, the neon hand prints will really "pop". She might even want to get her friends and the rest of her family to help her make the hand prints so they are different sizes. It sounds like fun to me. When she grows out of it in a couple of years give her the job of painting over it. No harm done. Trust me, the neon paint will show up over black. I've done it.

If you think you will ever re-paint the room (such as when your daughter goes off to college), it's going to be a nasty job and you will probably regret letting her paint it black. And if you put handprints on the wall, they will most likely be visible even under a new coats of paint and primer because they will be thicker than the black paint. Get her some hanging panels (like plywood) and let her go wild, but I'd leave the walls alone.

I think the black carpet + the black walls are too much and i think she might regret it afterwards...you might want to do 2 walls black, one with neon orange and green handprints and another with chalkboard paint..this is a fun way to leave messages and just be able to write on and have fun with her own walls. if the room isnt really shaped well to have 2 walls, just do a chalkboard wall and get her brightly colored chalk..{you can even do an entire room in chalkboard!]. Be sure to add touches of color within the bedroom and pull in those greens and oranges into her bedding, ect.

Have someone at the paint store help you pick out a black that will work. Sometimes make black out of a clear type base and it makes it very hard to work with. You'll probably have to use a couple coats. She should get that green and yellow glow-in-the-dark paint they have at some novelty stores! That would be fun for her handprints.

Absolutely! When you think of all the things a 14-year-old girl might do, painting her room black is just SO benign!! Love the idea of the handprints. My own daughter glued all her old CDs to the wall - the whole place looked like the inside of a disco ball.

Oh God, I did that once. Didn't work out so well, I highly don't recommend it....don't forget the black light. Gee, why did I do that.
I did see once, a bedroom painted light blue (ocean hue) with a black wall. On the wall was a painting of a ship fighting a storm on the ocean. That was a nice room. Actually, that was a fad in the '60's for awhile, painting one wall "black"...I guess I just got a little carried away, lol.

Yes! I was going to suggest a faux finish, so it wouldn't be pure black, but if she wants to throw some other colors in there, that would be an option as well. Fight the important fights! You don't want to fight her on everything. So fight her on the things that really matter. The color of a room you can live with; maybe even the color of her hair, if she decides to color it green. When it comes to bigger issues, say smoking since that's a health issue, then you can put your foot down because you allowed her to do other things....such as paint her room black.

I don't think that any childs room should be painted black. If anything you could let her paint only one wall black and then let her do hand prints or finger painting. But leave the other three walls a bright color.

if she pays for the paint and stuff, and when she gets sick of it pays to paint it back, sure, let her. They say that bright colors make people happier, or healthier, or something, but if it tickles her little heart to do that, let her. maybe you should tell her to do a test patch and see if the handprints work out, behind her bookshelf or mirror or something, you could even help her out and paint her feet and hold her up for footprints on the ceiling.
