Your social security number doesn't expire until you do. Your social security card doesn't expire either, but because it is made of paper, it can be destroyed. If the card is damaged, you can always go to the Social Security Administration office and request a new card.

You can go to www.socialsecurity.gov and punch in the number, they will give you an immediate response. Just because you received a notice doesn't always mean that it's no good. It could mean that someone else has stolen your identity and used your number fraudulently. If it was issued by the Social Security Administration, it is good. If it was given to you by a "friend," you can probably assume that it's not.

Take the letter, at least two forms of identification (with at least 1 photo ID) and your social security card to the nearest social security office. They are extremely helpful.

Did you have to pay money for this card? If you did, you are either the victim of a fraud perpetrated by an SSA employee (highly unlikely) or you are in possession of a false card. In the latter case, you need an immigration attorney.
