I want to invest in a really good kitchen knife that is sharp and chops and dices vegetables really well. I don't know anything about knives, but am willing to pay up to ~$150 or so for it. Any suggestions for what to look for and where to find it (ie, not Target or Walmart)?

I use nothing but Wustof Grand Prix 2. I use my knife everyday at work and love it. If I were you I'd get a Chef's knife. It can do everything. A website where I usually get all my knives from is: http://www.cutleryandmore.com/ , they have a big selection to choose from, as well as good prices.

depending on where you live... There are stores called the house of knives they are over priced. however the best knive i have found to cut veggies is a chef knife they tend to have a larger blade than most people are used to but they are awesome. you can even get the self sharpening ones. i personally have a set of Swibo Knives - Swiss army made them and they are awesome. just remember to never put your knife in the dishwasher. it isnt good for the blade. i hope this was helpful.
Some things to look for in a good knive are: the handle is comfortable, the knive has at least three rivets in the handle and that the knife has warranty.

The new Calphalon Katana series is a great buy. they have a knife called a Nakari that is designed just for fruits and vegis. they are all damascus knifes. which means instead of being a single piece of metal stamped or forged. it is multiple layers folded into it self that creates a stronger knife that stays sharp longer than an ordinary knife. and it leaves a beautiful pattern on the blade that can only be made by this process. i am a professional chef and this is my knife of choice. i have gotten rid of all my other knifes and use the katana series. they are worth looking into and for the price the value can't be beat.

A Santuko knife. Forged Cutlery is the best quality.

The Germans make the best knives in the world..... get a Wustof Santuko.... around $125. Is there a Bed, Bath, Beyond near you. They carry Wusthof.

I have a 10" chefs knife. It's a santoku. I got it from a local kitchen shop, and it was $90. I love it. I use it every single day. It say Zwilling-Henckels on it. You can't pry it out of my hands!

Any "French chef" knife will be perfect for that... and you will NOT have to spend that. Under $50 for sure... actually I grabbed one from a "dollar store" to experiment and it actually works Pretty well... I love experimenting and finding out for myself !!

All you need is a good paring knife.......I doubt you would have to pay 150 for a knife..that seems a bit pricey to me
