Someone told me that in Minnesota if you are pulled over by a police office you don't have to have your driver licenses with you. Instead, you just have to be able to produce it within 24 hours. Is this true?

Yes, you always have to have it with you.

If you know your social security number, most police officers can run your license from that. Yes, you are required to carry the license with you, but police officers understand that people are human and sometimes leave their wallet in the other coat pocket or whatever. I have also heard of the "produce it within 24 hours" scenario.

I think it's important to remember though, that if you don't have it with you, you are counting on the kindness of the officer not to give you a fine. So don't expect them to be lenient, but be as cooperative as you can be, and you may be surprised.

Yes you are supposed to have it at all times. You can receive a ticket and or fine, whatever your state has legislated. That being said, I think it's a courtesy (to give you 24 hours to produce) that MOST law enforcement officers extend, at their discretion. They don't have to, though. I mean lets say you forgot your wallet, but otherwise are "clean", they will most probably be courteous. On the other hand, let's say you're stopped for speeding, then give the officer a hard time, then he finds out you don't have your license on you and your registration is expired...you'll probably get a ticket. And rightfully so.

Your always supposed to have it with you. Some states are more lenient in the time to produce it. I just think it's best to have it on you at all times. You never know when you may be called upon to drive or have some means to identify your body. Not to mention being carded, cashing a check, etc. I couldn't go anywhere where and do very many things in which I'm not required to show a photo ID.

I was told by a local police officer that a DL is not required but you do need to have some form of ID to prove you are who you are. He also said if you don't have any ID they can put you in jail for 24 hours or until you can prove who you are.

I can't answer for Minnesota, but here in California you are required to have your driver's license on you when you drive. Failure to possess your license while driving is a violation of CVC 12951(a), an infraction.

Yes, as it says on your application for a DL, you are required to have it with you at all times while operating a motor vehicle. In Texas, if stopped and you do not have one, after verification by computer that you indeed do have a valid DL, you can be cited for Failure to Display DL.

In North Carolina - it is illegal to drive without your driver's license in the vehicle with you - the police can give you a ticket or a warning ticket - their option!@~

Technically you have to have your license/ID with you if you are over eighteen in public. If a cop wants to be a dick about it they can arrest you walking down the street without ID....and that was before 9/11 and the Patriot Act. Now they don't even need "probable cause" to pull you over and check your ID.

By law, you are supposed to have I.D. on your person at all times when you are in public - driving or not.

Usually you get a ticket for not having it with you - but legally they can haul you to the jail and verify your identity if they wanted to.
