This is a difficult question to answer because a lot of breeds can cost a lot when the dog you want is hard to find, or is from a champion line or a great breeder.
Here are a few examples, some my own and some are other breeders.
Bulldogges- can be very expensive because the female must have a cesearean section to have the puppies and there may be only 2 puppies in there, the female can only have about 3 c-sections in her breeding career, making the cost high, about $1500.
Chinese Cresteds-can be rare in certain areas of the country and can range from the mid hundreds to $2000. They are amazing dogs and can be great for people with allergies.
Second generation golden-doodles- Contrary to popular belief, golden doodles are not hypo-allergenic, it is the second generation ones that are good for allergies. They can be pretty pricey.
(Keep in mind, NO dog is hypo-allergenic completely, they have been proven to be better for people with allergies but are not perfect. Don't believe it if someone says otherwise).
Hunting dogs- A good hunting dog with proven lines can run $2000.
I know that makes four, but there are so many, and any breed can be expensive, depending on the lineage of the dog.

As a breed in general I know chihuahuas are pretty expensive... I've seen non KC registered for sale over the £1000 mark .. the females seem to be more expensive than the males.. and they seem to be in demand. Considering the size of dog you're getting you do pay alot...but then their living costs are pretty minimal in comparison with most other breeds.

My dog is a Bedlington Terrier, he cost about £600 and are one of the rarest dogs in the UK. They are really hard to find, because litters are not common and breeding isnt always successful.
If you get a good pedigree Chihuahua they are very expensive and are quite easy to find, but get a good, registered breeder.
But all dogs are expensive in the long run, they all cost money and you are continually giving money towards the dog for food, vet bills etc. So they will always be expensive.

I recently saw a British bull dog for £1800 and in contrast a border collie for £80...I suppose its as much a supply thing as a pedigree issue...but generally you will pay more from a good breeder as they spend more time and money on the welfare of the dogs and have them chipped and vacs done before they are sold.

I know a pedigree Chihuahua costs a fortune. I looked into getting a puppy and you can spend a good 1000.00 on one. Other then that there's pugs labradoodles miniature Yorkie's etc

mine was a border collie. Easy to find and purchase, but cost me over £3000 in vet bills during his short life.

I would say the Best In Show dogs (regardless of breed) at shows like Crufts, and their offspring. For the actual dog, it would probably cost thousands and thousands of pounds and a show quality pup from that dog would probably be well over 2000 pounds.
