How about something describing his outfit and how he look in the future, like:

I am a caterpillar. I may not look like much now (You may actually want to omit that sentence b/c I don't want your son to think his costume isn't fabulous). I have many legs and I am green and yellow (or whatever, you get the drift) I love to crawl on the leaves of trees and soon I will find a branch where I will make my cocoon, take a long nap and when I wake up, I'll be a beautiful butterfly.

I am a caterpillar and I eat LOTS of leaves and plants. One day soon, my belly will get very full and I will get tired. I'll crawl up on a branch and spin a cozy cocoon, and fall fast asleep. When I wake up, I will come out of my cocoon and be a beautiful butterfly.
