Are you talking about people who give to TV preachers or people who give money to their churches.
You give money to your church, because the bills are not free. It helps to pay for lights, water, sewage, maintenance of the building, supplies, mission trips, vacation bible school etc.. and of course you have to pay the preacher he has to live too.

Religion is based all on faith. They don't believe when they see. They believe before they see. Giving money to your religion is a constant commitment, showing that you serve. It is also faith, putting your money on the line. In many religions, faith brings great rewards.

Love gives. It is also thankful (to the giver) for what it receives. We are to be like God.God is love.
