If you are looking for a lively neighborhood that still relatively safe, I'd recommend Lower Queen Anne (sometimes also called Uptown), Wallingford, Ballard or Alki.

Lower Queen Anne (Uptown) is at the base of Queen Anne Hill (also very nice, but pricey)...It's home to the Seattle Center, Key Arena, lots of cute shops, bistros, bars and coffee shops.

Wallingford is the neighborhood directly west of the U-District. Lots of great ethnic restaurants, shops, bars, etc. The residential area itself is quiet and safe.

Ballard is possibly your best bet. Rent there is reasonable by comparison, the downtown area is really cute, lots of shops, restuarants, bars, a theatre, etc. I would, however, recommend finding a rental that is south of 65th street and west of 15th Ave.

Alki is right on the beach and is a popular hang-out for the young crowd. Bars and restaurants mostly, also a great bakery there...but living near the beach in the summer is a lifestyle...a pretty laid back one.

Here is the website I used to find my apartment when I moved here about 4 years ago:

GOOD LUCK!

My favorite areas are :
* West Seattle, (Alki area right on the beach)
* Bell Town (trendy downtown, very social area)
* Lower Queen Anne (easy to walk downtown, good restaurants) * Fremont (center of the universe, funky cool place to live) ,
* Wallingford.(University area, old houses)
* Greenlake (running, biking and walking paths around the lake with a lot of good restaurants).

Good Luck! Have fun in Seattle! It's a great city.

Welcome !!! Stay away from south Seattle, The crime there is bad, But the rent, and real-estate is cheaper.. East-side is nice Kirkland, Issaquah,Bellvue,North bend, You'll find West Seattle is so-so Alki beach area is nice, If your wanting to live in the city, you'll want to not live in Pioneer Square, that's a party area and a lot of homeless shelters any of the high rises are kind of expensive, also the parking is pretty bad, but your in walking distant to everything also the bus system is free for the city area so thats good, If you go north you'll find it getting cheaper and you also have the U.W, I hope that I have helped, and you'll find us Native Washingtionians very friendly....

to live..I suggest Fremont, or Belltown..if you want to live around college age kids (uw district). but I say Belltown is best of all..but most expensive...Queen Anne is a bit cheaper and nice as well.
