Actually.... no he doesn't see you as pack leader but sees you as someone he needs to look after. If he is barking trying to get out - he's after you to protect you. Dogs that accept a pack leader as an owner will settle and be fine when left. You need to assert yourself more and those who look after him. Think this through... why does he settle when you are at home? Try reading some dog training books - The dog Listener is a good start.
Good luck!

this is because your dog see's you as the domanant male in the house, from the dogs point of view, you are the alpha male in the pack and the dog and everyone else in the house when you are out, the dog see's as equal to him. to resolve this your going to have to make the dog learn that your dad is the alpha male. the dog will notice if your dad tells you to make him a cup of tea for example you get straight up and do it, answer the phone son you get straight up and do it etc and of course any disciplining of the dog while you are in the house should be dished out by your dad

Do you do everything with your dog - feed him/walks/play/training, etc? Try getting your mum and dad involved a bit more, he probably sees himself as your dog and is overly attached to you. If your folks give him treats for being good, a bit of play and attention and come out with you on walks while you are not working, he will start to see them as part of his family too, and be a bit more relaxed in their company. Try to get them not to start giving him all this attention while he is pining for you, as that will just encourage him, but get them to do it while you are there and he is happy. You may need to offer to do something for your folks, since it will sound suspiciously like you are passing your dog responsibilities on to them - parents need puppy training too! :D

Separation anxiety. How long have you had the dog? If over a year, he has a problem. You need to see a vet or animal behaviourist about this.

try visiting this site: http://www.dogpsychologycenter.com/tips/index.php
as was mentioned before, your dog views you as "pack leader," but doesn't have the same attitude toward your parents. you have to train him to accept them as "pack leaders" too. the website will give you lots of tips as to how to accomplish this. good luck!

He thinks your his mom, and he misses you and doesn't want you to leave, {Seperation Anxiety!}. Just curious! What does he do exactly, after you leave, that makes him a pain in the butt. Can you give us a few more details, so that we can give you more detailed answers. Thanks!

this is what my dobe is like! I am his master and everyone else around him are his playmates - in his mind anyway- so when im out he tries it on! your parents need to be firm with him and not let him get away with it! he wont do it front of you as like i said you are his master and he knows his place! try helping them discipline him and getting them to command him, and him to listen and obey them!

Its a pack mentality thing, he accepts you as pack leader, but counts himself as number two on the list.....
