Problem with my Nikon D50 with AF-s DX 18-55mm lens, while the manual focus works fine, the autofocus won't work at all. I have tried to fix it, reset it etc What has happened with my camera and will I have to buy a new lens?! Please help, thank you.

If your camera is still under warranty, take it back and get it checked out, before sending it away for repair. There may be a problem with one of the contacts between the camera body, found in the lens throat, and the lens itself.
Make sure your battery is fully charged. A depleted battery may not allow the autofocus to function, even though you can manually focus the lens.
Check out the links and have a word with Nikon UK. Failing that, go to:-

Nikon D50 Autofocus Not Working

Remember that there are two places to set MF or AF, both on the lens and the camera body. If you are having issues when it is set properly see at the camera store if a new lens (70-300 nikon is designed for D50-so good one to try) will work in focus. If it does then you have a lens issue- Nikon warranty should help you there. If not it's a camera issue- Nikon warranty again! Good Luck

Is there any way for you to try another lens? This might help you determine if the camera is faulty or if the lens is faulty. If you bought it at a camera store they would probably let you try one of their lenses. I definitly agree with the poster who suggested cleaning the contacts on the lens and on the camera body.

If all else fails Nikon does a pretty good job of turning around their repair work. I have a D50 that had a problem with something like the top shutter curtain not working on occasion when the flash was used (really odd problem). I sent it in under warranty and they had it back to me fairly quickly.

ignore the guy who says check the sensor on the camera body, there isn't one. decent cameras like slrs focus through the lens.
I think on the D50 you should have an option to reset the camera to the default settings, this could correct anything you may accidentally have set in the emnus which has turned off autofocus. Then on the lens check you have autofocus enabled on the af/m switch. Then test it, if there is no attempt to focus then get it repaired under warranty.

On the body of the camera look the sensor clean it with a q-tip with a little windex then use the other side of the q-tip to dry. These get dirty or smuged then they throw off the auto focus.

Make sure that you have not accidentally hit the "A/M" switch on the lens itself. This would disable the auto-focus.
