I have a border collie 12 years old. Fully trained and house broak, but every couple of weeks she decides to coat herself in poop. Looking to see comments with people who know why trained dogs do this? Please no joke answers.

Dogs roll around in poop to cover themselves with that smell - when they used to be wild and hunt, they would roll around in other animals' poop or dead things to mask their own smell from animals they hunted. It's got nothing to do with her being housetrained - but you can train her not to do it!

The reason why dogs do this is goes back before they where domesticated. Our wild dogs such as wolves, and dingos, etc., do this to have a sent to rub up against things and leave a sent behind. And it also acts like a natural defense and most predators wont go after them with the sent of poo on them. That is what our vet told us. We had a Maltese, and she'd go out into the pasture when we'd let her go outside to go potty and roll in the cow's manure. Needless to say she got a lot of baths.

Dogs are born without a scent of their very own. Most of the times they will look for a scent that is extremely strong to coat themselves with. My dog does the exact same thing, and does it every once in a while. Just moniter her outside time and wash your dog with a strong smelling dog shampoo to see if your collie can't except that as its new scent.

Pick up her poo before she get s chance to roll in it. You could try using Deter. Deter is a safe and effective easy to feed chewable tablet. It is used to stop dogs and puppies from consuming their own feces. I don't know that it would help the rolling thing, but maybe it would turn her off of her poo enough for her to stay away from it.

Good luck.

A lot of dogs do that with dead things like birds, and squirrel.

Pick up the poop and supervise your dog while she is outside. And of course, bathe her.

i think u should punish her for such behavior. get her a really nice toy. and when she does her bad deed, take it away from her for about 2 hours, then give it back. border collies r smart. she'll eventually get the message
