Take Kenpo:

Kenpo is a Japanese art of self-defense that was brought from China to Japan about 700 years ago by the Yoshida clan. The word means literally, "Fist Law," and one who practices Kenpo (literally a boxer of the Boxer Rebellion) is a Kenpi. The Chinese style was well suited to defend against the various unarmed Japanese martial arts of the 13th century, and few modifications were required to overcome the new unarmed systems that developed over the next 7 centuries. During this same period the Chinese system from which Kenpo was derived underwent so many changes that, while most of the Kenpo techniques can be found scattered among the hundreds of Chinese fighting systems, there is no single system in China today that resembles Kenpo.

OK first off punching, kicking or using weapons is rarely self defense its fighting.in order to say what you are doing is self defense you need to avoid causing injuries and look for a safe exit. i have been a doorman since i was 18 and i can count on 1 hand the number of people i have punched despite my main training being as a boxer.you need to learn how to use pressure points, locks and throws when you throw a punch you use your body to attack when you use the correct locks, holds and throws you use theirs they are powerless to stop you.also never be the first to strike it is best to counter attack.locks that put you behind the attacker are the best as you are out of their fighting arc.worst case scenario you can simply reach in and pull out their collarbone or bottom rib or shoulder blade there are other bones you can do that to but they need a little more precision.a good hard kick directly on the front of the kneecap should break the leg, if you bend their wrist so that their palm is facing their elbow you can break it just by pressing on it. i am told it only takes 3 pounds of pressure to break a bone. however you should only do any of that if you have no other way to protect yourself.having said all that if you are aware of your surroundings and peoples body language you should never have to use any of those

Given the lack of detail in your question I would agree with TAHOE REALTOR with one exception:

Purchase a shotgun instead of a handgun. Shotguns don't require any skill. Just point in the general direction and fire. Also, the sound of a shotgun pump is unmistakable. Chances are that the very sound of pumping the shotgun will deter your attacker. That's why most law enforcement officers recommend shotguns for home defense. If you hear someone in your home. Grab the shotgun and give it a loud pump. The intruders will likely head for the nearest exit.

Good luck to you. Hopefully you will never need to actually use this advice.

The best technique for defence is a punch to the nose.

I agree with some guys here. Impossible to answer your question here. The best self defense technique is to run. By the way Steven Seagal does not practice Jiu-Jitsu. He practices Aikido.

It depends on the circumstances. It is also WAY beyond the scope of this board. If you want very specific advice on dealing with a certain situation, describe it. If you want general knowledge, sign up & take classes.
