I've noticed in numerous television shows, that the family members etc ... all keep their shoes on, when entering a house. Wouldn't a person's floors/carpet be really dirty, if everyone wears their shoes in the house? I, myself, have never been to a home where anyone keeps their shoes on. They'd be tracking in dirt, grass and dog poop!! Is this the norm ... for people to walk into a house and keep their shoes on?

It is shoes off for everyone in my house. I don't like shoes on the floors it makes everything dirty. Whenever people come over they take their shoes off too. I have alot of friends who have the same rule in their home. The friends that don't have the rule in their house those of us with the rule always take our shoes off there anyway. A neighbor recently moved to our area and we invited her over and she arrived at the front door and saw all the shoes and me in my socks and walked in. I then said "oh, could you take off your shoes we don't wear shoes in our house." She did without any problem. After visiting for a while she left and when I went over to her house after a week or two I noticed her front porch looked alot like mine a couple of pairs of kids shoes and few adults. I naturally added mine to the pile before she opened the door. She said "i see you took off your shoes." "I enjoyed being sock footed at your house and how clean it was I decided it was time to join the bandwagon of shoe free living. I was so glad. Her kids and my kids come and go to each others homes never once wearing shoes past the door in either house.

We have a mat at the front door and everyone wipes their feet. We don't have carpets so I usually keep my shoes on if I'll be going back out. If I'll be staying in, I'd much rather not be wearing shoes, so I'll go to my room and put them away. It just depends on how I feel. Most people who visit though take their shoes off even though we tell them they can keep them on. Their just use to doing that in their own houses.

Well I know I'm not going to be licking the carpet anytime soon. I take my shoes off because it's more comfortable. I don't wear my work shoes through my house though ~ since I work in a hospital.

I would never force people to take off their shoes when they visit me. When I invited the people I also invited their shoes. We do have a doormat and no one has ever entered my house with dogsh+t on their shoes.

In Western culture, yes. But I still remember as a kid growing up in a Mexican/American culture. My grandma lived out in the country and would make us take off our shoes to keep the dirt out of her house.

Some people don't care about that kind of thing, but never walk into an asian home with shoes on or you'll never have another chance of visiting. And... yeah, nice lips.

I always take my shoes off, because it is my house. If someone is staying for a while, they can take them off if they are comfortable. I don't have white carpets so it doesn't bother me, they wipe their feet off at the mat at the door.
