get a water pistol and squirt them when they do it. this worked for me when my cat went close to my parrot cage..cats hate to be wet.

my 2 cats used to scratch evrything i bought a scratch pole + that werkd 4 a bit but then Jazzy-the mum- got 2 old and too tired to scratch the pole and went back to sofas now i make sure the door to rooms with nice things are ALWAYS shut and if i catch them doing it i tap them gently on the nose or squirt them with a water gun!!
o and if u r also havin a problem with cat pee on floor/sofas(i used to) wen u catch them put ther nose in it!!!! IT WORKS!! they both do!! I hope ur catz stop scratchin like mine hav!! good luck

Your best bet would be to cut the cats nails so even if it does scratch, it wouldn't cause any damage. You could also use a spray bottle on light mist and keep it near the couch and spray the cat when it scratches and say "hey" or "Stop it".
It works on my cats and I sure hope it works on yours.

If u get a scratch post and spray it with CATNIP because there is something in the catnip that attracts them and then put a fine line of white pepper over the area that you do not want them to scratch because they don't like pepper.

you should buy them a scratching post or put citrus peels near the sofa so they won't want to go near it.

Squirt them with a water gun when they do it. Won't hurt them, yet they don't like it. After awhile they'll quit.
