I like the second part of your question better 'Does baptism have adverse effects on innocent people'?
However lets try and answer your first question:-
I am atheist which means simply that I do not believe in God, as a consequence of that I also do not believe in any religion, but I certainly do believe that folk can be brainwashed into believing all sorts of rubbish, such as voodoo etc etc (and religion) if their 'belief ' is strong enough they will believe that that 'holy water' or ten rats tails will harm them then it could happen!
Back to point two, baptism is a sort of religious and symbolic washing away of sins so one can restart life's journey, you are correct to ask 'What about an innocent person', it must be some form of blasphemy to wash away sins that have never been committed?
Or even go to confession when you don't really have anything to confess!
Wasn't Jesus without sin? before he was baptised?
When he stepped in to save the prostitute from stoning he said
" Let him without sin throw the first stone" Why didn't he throw the first stone himself?
I have been Christened, Confirmed, Baptised, and was up to a point Brainwashed? Then I saw the light!!
Innocent??? innocent of what?
Plenty of room for thought in your question, what would you suggest as a suitable punishment for an innocent going to baptism? Turn them into a sinner, give them impure thoughts?
The mind boggles, could make a good film, along with a lot of blood, holy water and a good dollop of the crusaders, not forgetting loads of sex and plenty of 'proof' from one or two of the bibles.
Could be a hit, do you want to buy into it??

Its only a myth hunnie. For holy water to burn the skin, it would have to have acid in it. For people who are actually possessed, its the general idea of having anything holy put near them. They writh in terror and scream louder than you cant imagine. Its not the water, its the meaning behind it. The smoke is only hollywood trickery to make us gaze in wonder, awe and excitement.
Again, baptism is only a religious ritual. It will not have any adverse affects on anyone, no matter what theyre religion is.

Holy water is a carryover from the Old Testament. Jesus's arrival put an end to such things. No one on earth can bless water and make it holy. Only God can do that. Same thing with baptism. Baptism is still practiced, but it isn't necessary for entering Heaven.
