At his age, it is likely a fatty tumor, but a vet should really check it out..

If the lump seems to be "attached" you should have it checked, although it might be awfully traumatic for a 17 yr old, that is amazing. If the lump seems to be just "floating" and soft, it is most likely a fatty cyst. But I'm not vet and you need to follow your guts on this, after all, he's given you 17 years and this is where the love stuff comes in, you need to be strong and do what is the very best for him.
Good thoughts to you, it isn't easy when these things come up.

It could be a fatty tissue or it could be a tumor. The best thing you can do for your dog is to take it to a vet and get him the best help available.

what is WRONG with people? "my dog has a lump and we dont want to take it to a vet, any idea on what it is or how to treat it?" no one here is a physic or a VET, and even if they ARE a vet, no one, and I mean NO ONE can make a diagnoses over the internet!!!!!
JESUS, take the poor dog to a vet.....better yet, why don't you just find it a different home where the care enough and have enough common sense to take the poor pup to a vet!

How big is it and is it growing? My dog is 12 and he has a small lump on his stomach and I am very concerned about it. My vet gave him a clean bill of health so I guess it is nothing to worry about-I'm just a worrier! My suggestion is keep an eye on it and if it grows, you can remove it for your own peace of mind provided your dog is healthy enough to go through an operation.By all means, consult a vet, but don't let them brush it off. Use your judgement, too. If you think it is growing, have it removed.

The vet IS your best answer. I know you asked for some help besides the vet, but in a case like this, the vet will be your best answer.

wow.. 17... I had a border collie that had a tumor on his belly. The vet told us that it was nothing to worry about, and it seemed to be no problem for our dog. He died when he was 13 and it was old age and from leg and rear end problem that took him from us do to a car accident when he was a puppy.

If you won't take it to the Vet's, then I guess you should believe it's fatty tissue. If the dog drops dead, then you'll know that it's a tumour!
