Listen this is life-sometimes it hurts. He already told you what he wants to do. ie." get his life together: Give him the time and space to do that.
If he is meant to be with you, he will call/come back.
If not -then life goes on ie... your life.
Do things with your other friends/family members.
Go for long walks.
Do things that you enjoy for a while.

Have u heard the saying "If you love something set it free. If it comes back to you then it is yours forever. If it doesn't then it never was." Also nothing but time will ease the pain. Move on with your life and if he comes back to you then you can try again. If not then you were not just sitting around waiting for him and maybe you will unexpectly find someone else that will mean even more to you. Life is too short to sit around waiting. Go out and enjoy life.

Sounds to me like you really care for this guy. I don't exactly know the situation about the meaning of getting his life back together. Give him his space to figure out what he wants.
