You can scissor the mats, in the direction of the hair, as if you were making long dreadlocks..Then, when the mat has been split into smaller sections, pull them apart, using thumb and fingers..then brush or comb until the loose hair comes out.. You can bust any mat with this method, and save most of the coat and hair length..
I recommend the metal comb and slicker brush, or pin brush.

Take the dog to a reputable groomer and if they are too bad, tell them to strip the dog w/a #10 blade. You may have to put a sweater on him after for a few days. They can get "embarrassed" from having a short coat. When the coat starts to come in, BRUSH HIM EVERY DAY.
Good luck.

Our dog has really long, unmanageable hair and is constantly running thru the woods getting all matted. We spray "no more tangles" on her, its for kids, and it really helps to get the brush thru. Sometimes she gets a bad mat which has to be cut, but this can be difficult as its real easy to accidently cut the skin. Try brushing, but if a mat is real close to the skin, take your dog to a groomer to get it out.

depending on how bad the mats are you should take the dog to a groomer. if you try to cut them out you can cut the skin accidentally and injure you pet, if you try to comb them out you could pull hair and cause pain for your pet. if the mats are bad enough, just have the dog shaved and keep up with regular brushings so this doesn't happen again. good luck.

Use some cooking oil and rub it into it...most of the time it helps loosen the matted fur and you can almost always pull the hair out of the mat without causing to much pain. Or you could always cut it out if the mat is really bad. Hope I helped you.

Brushing. If the matts are in an extreme case. The vet.

Right now you should probably take your pup to the vet for a shave, and ask him/her for grooming tips. :]

Use baby shampoo on the dog and comb it out a little while the soap is on him. Then after the bath comb it rest of the way. good luck.

try brushing his hair every day and then you don't have to worry about it matting, but to answer your question as to how to get them out, b-r-u-s-h it and then if that doesn't work get the god groomed.
