I am planning on returing to school for an MPA degree. Is it true that a Master's Degree is more difficult to finance than an undergraduate degree? Why is that? What are some outside sources of aid for financing a master's degree? I'm currently working on the FAFSA, but wondering if there are any more options out there?

Thank you!

Master degrees are more difficult to get funding because undergraduate programs are the most important to most schools. It is not impossible to get help though. See if you can get an assistantship working at the school- most of the time compensation includes free course credits. Look up fellowships and scholarships in your particular degree of interest.

The federal grants are not existant at the masters degree level, but the work study program does exist on the masters degree level. Teaching and research assistant jobs are available for pay. The college's financial aid website and office will have a list of outside scholarships for graduate students, too. Also, there is a limited number of scholarships available which can be located by joining several free membership scholarship search websites. Good luck!

Yeah, it is true that the financing is a bit more difficult at the masters level - the FAFSA will generally lead to loans whereas at the undergraduate level you had a better chance at grants. As far as other options, most programs have fellowships/grants of their own and they generally have a form for you to fill out - some programs automatically consider you for these upon admission. Get to know your financial aid counselor.

What about applying for a scholarship? I am sure there are many available. Enquire from the office of student affairs.

Because they aren't for everybody. You MUST maintain a 3.0 or higher.

Most cases, employers will pay a portion of your tuition. Check with them.
