While I remain disappointed that the PLG era didn't work out, I am in total agreement that Walter Smith is the right appointment for Rangers football club. His record is unmatched in Rangers history as far as I am concerned, having been involved in the 9-in-a-row titles in the 90s.
The main thing Walter and his assistant Ally McCoist bring to the table is they are both Rangers-minded, both being died in the wool Rangers supporters since childhood and know exactly what is required of the team by the Rangers support. Walter has a knack of getting the best out of players who have previously been under-performing and Ally will no doubt liven up the dressingroom with his inimitable sense of humour. Walter and Ally have turned Scotland round from a demoralised and disorganised bunch everyone was laughing at to one playing with restored pride and passion and good deal of organisation: a team which our opponents will again have to treat with a bit of respect.
The one problem I have with this appointment is that it has left Scotland rudderless again just as the national team's fortunes have taken a turn for the better. It speaks volumes for the SFA's old-fashioned fuddyduddy outlook on things that they would not consider Walter capable of doing both jobs as a compromise. Since most national team commitments are condensed into a 10-day period, and that club fixtures are arranged to accommodate international fixtures, surely it is not outwith the bounds of possibility for a club manager to delegate responsibility for club affairs to an assistant while he is involved with the national team. Unless they revise this outdated attitude, this scenario is going to repeat itself over and over again in the future whenever a national team manager is offered a more lucrative job in club football.
There is little doubt that Walter regarded the Scotland job as a great honour, as all incumbants of the position should, but there is not a football manager anywhere in the world who, when offered the chance to work with players day-in, day-out, will not take the club job. Hopefully, the SFA will get the right man in to the Scotland hotseat to continue where Walter left off and I hope that man is Joe Jordan. He's a great man with the Tartan Army and has served Scotland with distinction as a player.

Watty smith is a dyed in the wool rangers fan.
He will give 100% to the job but it still might not
be enough to catch the auld enemy celtic.
Though not a fan of scottish football, I'm looking forward to a strong rangers team as at least one team still stands for the Union and flys the British Union Flag.
