2 Eggs.

the first parts a statement and does not specify what the quantity is made up of. (eg) they could be being half his quantity of apples.

For 3 people to buy half an egg each means there were 2 eggs.

0+1/2=1/2
1/2*2=1

1+1/2=1 1/2
1 1/2*2=3

3+1/2=3 1/2
3 1/2*2=7

He started with 7 eggs. (But who wants to buy half an egg?)
