Yesterday at work I turned in a flash drive that a friend had left behind because my friend said that she would come by and get it that afternoon. I gave it to the office secretary and saw that she put it in the top drawer of her desk, which is unlocked. Today my friend called me and said that she didn't get it and asked me if I could get it out of the office for her (I have a key). I don't usually get into people's desks, but I was wondering if it would be okay. I'm not sure it would be best to call the secretary at home to ask for permission. What do you think?

I would ask permission. Otherwise the secretary will know someone has been in there it will create a mess. It would be better if it could wait, but if not ask permission. This also shows respect.

Call the secretary. Do not lift it from her desk without her permission. Especially, since this is at your work. Tell your friend that you'll do your best, but unless you get ahold of the secretary you aren't willing to just go get it. Your friend should understand. At the very least, it may have to wait until Monday...at which you can tell your friend that is the two options, either you get a hold of the secretary or you'll have to wait until Monday. There are no other alternatives.

I would, too, go for permission. To give da secrtary a call at home wont be a big deal, but no permission, tomorrow may creat a headacke and lose of your confidentiality with the office stuffs.

You should ask permission: as you don't know what else is in that draw. Also, if something goes missing, you will be the first person, she would look at for blame.
Another thing to consider, although she doesn't keep it lock, it is still her area and personal stuff. How would you feel is the situation was reversed?

Go get it, but leave the secretary a voicemail and a post it where the drive was sitting.

If your reputation at your place of work is important to you YES its a big deal. It was your friend that did not do as she said she would. Let her wait. It obviously was not that important. ANY way you work this you are in the wrong at work. Other people desks are off limits.

I would call a voicemail, becuase you would want to be notified if someone was going to be in your personal space. Don't interupt her saturday though. Just be like " Hi this is _____ I need to get that flashdrive out of your office. I was just going to let you know in case you had and concerns" and then she shouldn't mind
