Then tell your friend to stop it if he wants.

He won't stop it, but he'll lie to you about it. You may as well lie to him too.

It's the same as kicking any other kind of "addiction" or urge.

Start by going to Confession. Now that you know it's a serious sin, every time you do it, you've committed sin. If that means you have to go every week, so be it. This will help at least because going to Confession is difficult in that you are forced to confront your sins. It's very uncomfortable. It will also help because, after recieving forgiveness for your sins, you will be fortified against the temptation to commit the same sin again.

You must repeat this cycle as needed, as many times as it takes. Over time, you will begin to notice that you are tempted less and less, sinning less, and thus, going to Confession less. This is how it works.

For now, it might not be a bad idea for you to put some prayer cards, a crucifix, or something Spiritual in the place where you tend to commit this sin most often. Also, whenever and where ever you are when tempted, say a prayer or two.

Stay away from the things that tempt you, whether they are websites, literature, people, whatever. Distance yourself from any and all temptations as much as you can.

Most important - BE PATIENT with yourself. This is not going to be a quick-fix. This is not going to be easy either. If you are serious about masturbating less, you will do these things, and whatever else you come up with that helps.

Between the day you've defeated this temptation, and now, you will duffer setbacks, you will lapse in your prayers, but yo wil lalso experience enough victory to know that it is your faith that is helping you in this fight.

Lastly, if not already, pray the Rosary (at least one decade per day). That will help also.

The story of Onan is NOT about masterbating, it is about disobedience. Onan was supposed to raise up children to his dead brother, and refused, because the child would not be considered his. It was an inheritance issue, NOT a masterbation issue. Onan wasn't masterbating, he was having sex with his wife (formerly his brother's wife, before his brother died, leaving no children) and he "pulled out" rather than take a chance on making her pregnant.
People really should read, rather than just take the preacher's word.
There is NOTHING in the Bible about masterbation. There are laws about not having sex with relatives, people of the same sex, even animals...but not ONE WORD about masterbation. If God had such a big problem with it, I'm sure He would have mentioned it.
But, then, there are way too many people who believe that anything that brings any pleasure at all just HAS to be sinful. Pity those folks, and enjoy the beautiful world God gave us...including your body.

Masturbation is a grave sin, because it misuses a gift from God for selfish purposes. Don't listen to people who tell you that you can't stop, or that anybody who says they have is lying. These people are conformed to this age, not trying to do God's will.

Human sexuality is a great gift when used correctly. The husband and wife coming together as one, when completely open to creating new life, participate in God's creative work on a very intimate level and are even an image of the Trinitarian nature of God. When this gift is abused (the meaning of the word masturbate) by contracepting, fornicating, or masturbating, it is a great insult to God.

The greater the gift, the more scandalous when it is abused.

yes, well...

it is considered a sin... there is this story in the old testament, where onan gets cursed by god for 'dropping his seed to the ground' - i think those are the words- thus wasting it...
so it has to be a sin, right? on the other hand... EVERYBODY does it. there just is no way not to do it... and the catholic church, which consists entirely of men, knows it too... so the whole issue is kind of not talked about... but there are of course more fundamentalist churches, and also groupings within the catholic church that consider masturbation to be an express ticket to damnation...
* shrugs* to each its own, i guess...
sorry, got to go now... i need to jack off. :))

Judeo-Christian tradition has taught for thousands of years:
1. Single people should be celibate.
2. Married people should be faithful to each other (adultery is wrong).

The Catholic Church recognizes the power of sex when it teaches, "Sexuality affects all aspects of the human person in the unity of his body and soul."

Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person. A chaste person's body and spirit lives in unity and opposes any behavior that would impair that unity.

Masturbation is contrary to the human dignity of the person and anyone about whom the person has lustful thoughts, and the dignity of human sexuality.

With love in Christ.

Every Sperm Is Sacred Lyrics
Artist: Monty Python
Album: The Meaning Of Life

DAD:
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.
You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

GIRL:
Let the heathen spill theirs
On the dusty ground.
God shall make them pay for
Each sperm that can't be found.

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is wanted.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.

MUM:
Hindu, Taoist, Mormon,
Spill theirs just anywhere,
But God loves those who treat their
Semen with more care.

MEN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.

WOMEN:
If a sperm is wasted,...

CHILDREN:
...God gets quite irate.

PRIEST:
Every sperm is sacred.

BRIDE and GROOM:
Every sperm is good.

NANNIES:
Every sperm is needed...

CARDINALS:
...In your neighbourhood!

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is useful.
Every sperm is fine.

FUNERAL CORTEGE:
God needs everybody's.

MOURNER #1:
Mine!

MOURNER #2:
And mine!

CORPSE:
And mine!

NUN:
Let the Pagan spill theirs
O'er mountain, hill, and plain.

HOLY STATUES:
God shall strike them down for
Each sperm that's spilt in vain.

EVERYONE:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is good.
Every sperm is needed
In your neighbourhood.
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite iraaaaaate!
