In my opinion it would seem more probable that Jesus is myth. Greek mythology mingled with Jewish tradition. For the purpose of grafting gentiles into a more substantial (for the time in their opinion) religious history.
The Gospel of 'Mark' appears to be one BIG parable or story if you will rather than an attempt of writing about an actual historic person. Paul (whos writings are much earlier than the gospels) has a 'spiritual' jesus, and likens his own appearance to that of the disciples. And never mentions Jesus as a recent person of history. He references Jesus only as a figure.
Jesus was to some of these early Greeks and Jews, as Uncle Sam is to some Americans. But was a personification of the hebrews + greek religous perception
Then there were attempts to make Jesus, an actual human from history. And the christians that believed this won the propaganda war. the rest is history

~~~j,,,, Check out the book by Joseph Campbell called "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" and you will find dozens of "Jesus Characters" or as Carl Jung would say 'Archetype', as Joseph Campbell would say, "One of the many World Saviours in Mankind's Religious History",,,,I beleive he was as real as The Buddha(Gautama), died as a Martyr, and his Legacy was Mythologized into The Levantine Motif, thereby becoming
The Living( to be sacrificed) Model of how to Live Life, so that the Soul will be Nurtured and consequently become an Enlightened Being,,, just as they taught and became themselves. This is the Ultimate Message.
I'll probably get flamed for this or something, but I'd really like to know why, unless you plan to make other questions, you're only asking for one side of things.
I could understand if you said because being the internet you'd get flamed, which I can sympathize with you about, but still, it's like eating one dish and judging an entire cuisine on it.
As for the question, I believe he was real and he made a major impact on the world. As for -what- he was, that's really up to you to decide.
He was a real person who taught ideas which were also taught by other intelligent men in other countries.
He was not a con man, it was the other people who took the stories of his life and misrepresent them in what is now the bible. These men took what they wanted people to think and believe and left out the other parts. He was way above in intelligence of those people with whom he lived at the time.
I have read one idea that the Jesus of the bible was actually a conglomeration of several men of the time. There was no actual Jesus as described in the bible. The biblical character of Jesus from the bible was, like the very bible itself, a work of fiction
The History Channel implies that he may be a real historical figure. If he was than he probably thought that he was the messiah and did preach some good. You have to suspect his motives to claim he was the son of God though because he said God's silly Old Testament laws did not apply. I don't know about you but I never had balls big enough to say my fathers rules did not apply.
He may have existed. From the inconsistencies in the gospels, I think it's quite possible that the biblical Jesus is more likely to be a composite literary figure. Like someone Daniel Steele would paste together. Too good to be true.:-)
He could have been someone who was smart and recognized that in order to change the world; you can't just explain things to people because they don't listen. He needed attention to accomplish his goals. He lived in a time of symbolism and superstition and he must have known it.
Yes, maybe he was schizophrenic, but a con man? That's some con you're willing to be crucified for. I think he was a con man, but not just to get peoples money or attention, but he changed the world.
Jesus was probably a real man around that time who did something good enough to get his name remembered. But bing the son of God? Can we get a DNA test on that one?
Probably not real, but I really don't care that much. The thing is as to what he really was isn't possible to tell since there isn't any outside sources. He might just have been a rabbi and then got a big fan club after he died
