Labs are dogs which were, like the Newfoundland, were used to working in water, and assisting the fishermen of Newfoundland to retrieve game or fishing nets. they can with stand all types of weather outside, but like the majority of people today that treat dogs as part of the family, rather than as dogs. I think that every owner or family must decide the best way to care for the breed that they have chosen. the laws state the shelter, food and water must be provided to the dogs whether inside or out. This can be troublesome in cold weather due to water freezing, and improper shelter. If your family has decided that your lab is an outside dog then make sure that the dog has enough room to curl up to reserve body heat in his dog house and you may even try to provide aditional insulation arouond the dog house to help him keep warm during colder weather. you should consider the weather changes in your area in making the decision to make a dog an outside only. if the weather gets below zero degrees including the wind chill then the dog should have a heated place to stay warm, and a heated water bowl. also if the weather changes more than 50 degrees from the high of the day to the low at night they should have additional care taken to ensure temperature regulation. as this is an extreme change in temperature.

Bring him inside, my Lab loves the outdoors but not in the wind cold in rain. Anything near freezing with precipitation is too cold. My Lab is an indoor dog and I could not image leaving him out in anything that I would not be comfortable in.

31 degrees is fine (as long as he has shelter.) I live in Montana, and after 7 years with my (hunting) lab, she prefers to be outside in a snow storm. I begin to bring her inside at around 10 degrees. All of the bird hunters I know do about the same! Good luck, and give him a biscuit for me!

My Lab is outside right now and it has finally warmed up to -5 deg.
Common sense needs to be your guide for when to bring a dog inside. If the dog spends most of it's time lounging in front of the fireplace it will be ill equipped for withstanding cold temperatures. However if that same dog has been spending most of it's time outside as the seasons change it will become very uncomfortable lounging in front of that same fireplace.

Why on earth would you keep your dog outside? If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for him. Dogs need companionship just as much as people do. Bring him inside, no matter what the temperature, he will be a much happier boy to be with you.

I wouldn't leave any animal outside in the cold, or the rain. Bring them into your house

My labs are outside in the day but we bring them in at night. They are pack animals and love to be near you - I say 31 is cold and your lab will enjoy his night of luxury!

Be safe and bring him in. 31 degrees is cold! Even if you have to keep him in the basement or garage. Remember it is colder when you calculate the windchill as a factor.

31 is not too cold for him to be outside. He will be fine.

But why do you have an outside only dog? Why doesn't he normally live inside your house, with your family?

It is safe for your dog to be outside. You have shelter for him and if he uses it he will be fine. 31 is not that cold. We live where it gets a lot colder and many people have their dogs outside year round. If you want designate a nice old blanket or quilt he can lie on inside his shelter. Don't put hay it will only attract mice.
