Its uncomfortable but bearable. You will most probably be laying on you left side;
You will NOT necessarily be asleep! You may get a light sedative, depending on the hospital's policy but you wil NOT get a full anaesthetic;

I have had 2 done with absolutely no memory or pain related to the event. The meds are great, you get one to make you forget and then the others for pain and relaxation. The absolutely worst part of a colonoscopy is the prep....but it is very important to complete. You should be lying on your side for the procedure. Good luck and I wish you the very best results.

A little info I think should be considered about this drug Versed ( Midazolam ) that is used for Sedation for many medical procedures..Sedation and General Anesthesia are not the same and quite a few people being given Sedation
think they are being given General Anesthesia!
There is simply no good or valid reason to ever purposely induce amnesia during a medical procedure. It is only a recent development in medical thinking that amnesia is somehow a "benefit" to the patient. On occasion some
some patients will remember a bad experience. Forgetting does not mean it did not happen!!
I feel that if people were aware of the effects of this drug they would Opt For Another Drug!
Erasing someones memory of what was done to them is wrong!!
In fact, many people who use Versed for " IV Sedation,Conscious Sedation" Twilight Sedation, during a procedure are Awake For The Entire Procedure but remember nothing, often Believing They Were "Out" the whole time.
Versed (Midazolam) is an amnestic. It is also commonly used for minor procedures like setting broken bones,colonoscopies,endoscopies, dental procedures like extractions,conscious sedation,twilight sleep, so that patients won't remember pain and discomfort.HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THOSE SENSATIONS WILL NOT BE EXPERIENCED!!!!
A note from an anesthesiologist
I agree that using midazolam alone in painful situations is wrong. I've heard people getting colonoscopies and screaming, and maybe they remember, maybe they don't.
A note I got from someone on Yahoo Answers who did have a bad experience..This is very disconcerting... My sister said she heard me screaming from the waiting room but assumed it wasn't me. When we left we heard another female patient screaming. I did a lot of research since your post, thanks so much for the info.
Here is a note from a Dentist Who uses Versed
I've used Versed 1000+ times during oral surgery procedures and I've never had a complaint. It's a miracle drug because it is safe and it causes you to not remember an unpleasant experience. My answer to him is isn't it better to have not experienced the pain than to have forgot it. No wonder you have had no complaints they have no memory of the procedure.....
I feel that giving a drug for amnesia is cruel I would not want it done to me!
A strange development in medical thinking that it's okay for a patient to have
pain as long as they don't remember it and think they slept thru the procedure..

You will be lying on your side & be under conscious sedation during the procedure, which hopefully you won't remember much of it. If you are anxious, ask the doc/nurse for an anti-anxiety before the procedure.
The pain factor is individualized, my girlfriend went in for one and her colon was "twisted" thus it was painful. However, if your colon does not have any pathological changes the discomfort typically arrises from the air they use to extend the bowels. This tends to make you feel gassy.

It doesn't hurt, I promise you. First, they put an IV in your arm to deliver the medicine that will pretty much knock you out shortly. Then you turn over on your stomach. And ya know what? The next thing I knew they were waking me up! I slept through it all! I've had it done 2 times, and it IS the easiest surgery! Don't worry, you won't feel a thing. And you'll probably fall asleep like me.

don't be scared and nervous...you will be on your back and watching the procedure...it is very interesting what the doctor can tell you...my doctor said here is your liver, there is the kidneys, etc. it was a big screen tv type setting and they prepare you the day before...be sure to follow all the directions and that will help you get thru the proceedure but you will come away with information about yourself...not too painful...discomfort at times the answer is yes

The Colonoscopy will not hurt. You will be lying on your side when it is performed and under mild sedation. Nothing to worry about.
The day before, though, is miserable. You will spend your day on the toilet.

I just had mine done yesterday (Monday). Sunday's prep was terrible. It was like giving yourself the flu on purpose. And you feel like urine is coming out of your butt- its way worse then diarrhea. But you will survive this and that truly is the worst part. When they gave me the sedatives I felt it within 10 seconds working into my system. The procedure was about 30 minutes, but seemed like 10 at most. The worst part of this is the bloating/cramping feeling you get. They will push air inside your colon to enlarge it and see whats going on. It's uncomfortable at times, but bearable. You will be just fine! I'm only 22 and it turned out ok for me. Best of luck to you and follow the dr's orders!

The doctor gives you pain relievers and a sedative to bring you into a state called "conscious sedation." This is not like general anesthesia, where you’re unconscious, but a pleasant, sleepy, relaxed dreamlike state in which you don’t feel a thing.

they first have you bend down and insert a suppository
or they make u lie down on ure left side and insert an enema
then u have a while to have ure bowels
then you will be prolly wering a gown and either on your back or side you will be laying down and they lubricate whatever they insert in and it slides RIGHt up. it is very uncomfortable and mine was barely bearable i was in soo much pain
they never gave me medicine to calm me.
if you don't know what it feels like try it with a q tip or something
