Whitstable is a nice little town on the coast (famous for its oysters). Leeds Castle near Maidstone is very impressive. Broadstairs is a lovely old-style seaside resort and Rochester & Chatham are well worth a visit.
You might also consider going across to France on the ferry.

WOOO KENT! Ive lived in Dover all my life, and although the town itself is a bit run down, there is a world famous castle there, and also the cliffs, as well as an old boat in the museum that predates stonehenge and the pyramids. also, try to visit Bologne near Calais across the channel in the ferry or the tunnel. Elsewhere in Kent, Tenterten is a nice place, and Canterbury looks just as it did 400 years ago, in the bit surrounding the Cathedral, i would say is one of the best places in Kent, me and my friends get the train there often. There is also London about 50 miles away, and Leeds castle aswell as Hever Castle, the whole of Kent is really picturesque with the North Downs and the Forests of the Weald, but you may want to avoid the Isle of Thanet and Sheppey, they are real dumps, yet packed with people at the same time

I'm sort of slanted against Kent having spent seven years at boarding school there. Canterbury is about as good as it gets. Margate's probably worth a visit so that you have some sort of genuine comparison when you describe anywhere else as awful.
To be completely fair it's not all bad - the countryside around Faversham with all the Oast houses and orchards is very nice, and Hever Castle is worth a visit.

Depending on your interests, there is much to see in Kent.
History would take you to Leeds Castle,Battle, where the battle of Hastings was fought, 14th Century Bodiam Castle and many more.
Within easy travel are places such as Howletts Park Zoo,Sandwich where the Earl made the first filling between slices of bread and Elizabeth the First wined and dined. Brambles Wild life Park, Bleak House in Broadstairs famed by Charles Dickens.
Of course there is Dover gateway to gay Paree..Margate for great fish and chips and Canterbury itself for night life and shopping, hope this helps

Definitely Leeds castle. Historic Sandwich is well worth a visit. A bit further away is Ightham Mote, a medieval moated house, and Hever Castle, home of Anne Boleyn and Knole House. Google National Trust and English Heritage for lots of ideas.

Canterbury is a great historical city itself, especially the cobbled back streets. Then there is Dover Castle and Cliffs, Deal, Leeds and Walmer have castles. Chatham for the Docks. New Romney, beautiful hop growing area and Hythe minature railway to take you right through to Dungeoness power station, Hastings - (Battle of) , to name a few.

I would echo a lot of the other answers about towns to visit in Kent.
It's also worth hunting down some of the best food producers as you will be in "The Garden of England".
For example, there are vineyards, Brogdale Orchards in Faversham, Cider makers, breweries, particularly Shepherd Neame in Faversham, Syndale Valley Cheesemaker... the list goes on.
Also in May there will be a classic car and motorcycle show in Faversham (May 20th) and the first weekend in September, Faversham hosts the enormous Hop Festival - beer, music, entertainment all weekend.

Dover / Leeds / Rochester Castles
Rochester and Chatham town check out their Dickens festival but they normally have all different stuff going on - if you can splash out on a meal try Mr Topes restaurant
Margate if its a nice day for the beach there is an amusement park there to
Maidstone for local shopping or Blue Water on a bigger budget
