Tolerance is not one of Christianity's most self-touted virtues, actually, and yes, before a certain decision called Texas against Johnson, the right wing faction of the Christians DID try to "ban" homsexuality by maintaining the criminality of sodomy (defined as oral OR anal sex).

I'd like to see how those Christians would feel if a group of gays tried to ban Christianity. And to those who ask "how can you ban homosexuality?" There have been laws on the books in many states that made sexual acts between members of the same gender illegal. Marriage is another issue all together, but Christianity doesn't have a monopoly on marriage, just to be accurate.

Homosexuality is an abomination according to the OT, as is also a woman wearing clothing that appropriately can be worn by a man. In other words, it's AN ABOMINATION (same word) that a woman wears jeans. According to the same book that bans homosexuality, women who wear clothing that could be mannish clothing (and not "long and loosing fitting" dresses) are damned.
It does not refer to a woman pretending to be a man, or dressing like a lesbian; it talks directly and clearly about wearing garments that a man would wear: i.e. jeans, trousers, etc. Women are instructed to wear only long and loose-fitting dresses.
Hating homosexuality is not just intolerance, it's hypocrisy in the extreme.

I don't think anyone could "ban" homosexuality. The Bible clearly states to love one another. THe Bible doesn't say anything about Christians campaigning for the preservation of the family...why do liberals get confused about this? it has nothing to do with tolerance.

As I always do, I'll start out by saying that Conservative Christians are the ones who believe the GLBT community is wicked. It's not all Christians.
And that said, I have to let you down. Generally Conservative Christians do not try to "ban homosexuality." Rather, they deny GLBT basic rights and respect. They also remain ignorant to the needs and wants of GLBT people.
But they do so under the "Love the sinner, hate the sin" mantra.
And, to be fair, there are individuals in such churches who change their minds when they discover friends or family are GLBT. Unfortunately, not all of them do.
AND YES, it is a good example of Conservative Christians' tolerance.

methinks you are abusing the word tolerant
there is a healthy tolerance called negative tolerance. This means I repect your right to invest your life largely as you see fit even though you may make seriously bad life choices with serious eternal consequences and this is in fact a widely held Christian position and consistent with the parable of the prodigal son where the dad in the story represented God who let his kid go slop with the pigs till he came to his senses and waited and ran to the kid when he came home
an unhealthy irrational, positive tolerance says I have to agree, accept, embrace and affirm with every nutty choice you make while you insult choices I make and, to a mature person, is clearly part of a leap of irrationality and post modernism philosophy
can you clarify which type of tolerance you mean

Who said Christians are trying to ban it? Personally - as a Christian - I am not against gay people and have no problem with gayness at all. However from what I understand, some Christians do not wnat to offer their B&Bs to gay people. 1st of all, its their home + their business, and if they feel they are being an accomplice to "man laying with man" - then if it is against their religion they shouldn't do it. I think they feel they are offering them room to have sex etc - in which they don't believe in that. Its is different to owning a sweet shop and saying don't come in. Any level headed person will understand this.
I personally don't mind gays but understand why people feel like this. If I owned a B&B I would probably feel the same - but its good because I don't. They need to come up with a Law that doesn't favour one against the other.

How does one ban homosexuality. You can not ban a whole group of people. You can speak out against a certain lifestyle but you cannot stop folks for being who they are. Christians have a right to speak out against what they believe to be sin. Gays have a right to live and work. I am a Christian and would never harm a gay in word of deed. I don't like some of their parades, like in Toronto, I don't like nudity and I live in a country of free speech so I have the right to say that. But that would not stop the gay lifestyle. I believe that they have a right to live and work in peace and freedom without harm like all of us. I have heard of terrible things done to gays and it greatly upsets me. We can disagree, but not be harmful to the person.

Heck, no. I am a Christian and I think that that the far-right banning homosexuality is on par with how they advocated slavery and banned inter-racial relationships in the past. My Jesus would never advocate this kind of prejudice.

The question is meaningless. Christians are called to be tolerant and loving of other people, but not tolerant of sin. Christ never tolerated sin, but dealt firmly and lovingly with those who were ensnared in sin. Just as His Church does today.
