I was a Linguist in the AF. Basic training was simple. It isn't as physical as the Army or Marines, but tougher than the Navy. It'll prob be the hardest thing you'll ever have done to that point, but everyone goes through it, and sure some wash out, but it's doable. As far as where you go depends on your job. Networking can take you pretty much anywhere. When you first join up, you don't really get a chance to go where you want. You CAN request a different assignment, but the second one you have to take. Generally your bargaining coms with reinlistment. You can always say I'll re-inlist if you send me wherever. Some jobs in the AF are lacking so they will not only give you a bonus, but will let you go where you want, just to fill a spot in that field. Aerial gunner will be hard, as only thing we got that requires a gunner is the AC-130. One thing i do recommend is to not leave for basic training without a garunteed job. So many of the guys I went to basic with, had generic job fields. Some got cool ones others got things I'd think are boring. So if there is something you want to do, get it in writing. Recruiters in every branch have a quota to meet. You do have the final say in what you want to do.

Two of my friends went to Air Force BMT in 2006, and they said it was a piece of cake. Air Force has the easiest boot camp in the US military. That's not to say you never do anything hard or you'll never be stressed out, but its all over before you even know it. Even during "Warrior Week" they said they sat around a lot.

Chances are you won't get stationed where you want. If you can't handle that then I would recommend the reserves.

As far as deployments go, I don't know how often your job deploys. But the standard deployment for the Air Force is only 4 months. Which is extremely short when talking about deployments(other services do 7-18 months). Plus the Air Force gets to live in great conditions while the Army and Marines are in tents.

Yes, every family is sent a video of their son or daughter's experiences in BMT. So there are a gazillion of them out there.
