We are painting our living room (12'x15') a light tan colour and a friend has said the ceiling could be the same or just a bit lighter. If this is the case, how much tint would be added? and we have a lovely border around the ceiling, how do we treat it? My husband isn't very daring and says that ceilings are WHITE - just as the ceiling paint is WHITE!! Would we just do the trim and border a plain cream or bone colour?

I'm sorry, but with a room no bigger than that, I think you should stay with a clean white ceiling. If it was a very large room, you could get by with the color, and it is "in" now, but I honestly don't think 12 x15 is big enough to pull it off. (NO offense intended:) But it will close in the room and make it look smaller. You don't have to go with a flat finish either, a semi-gloss looks great on ceilings and will give you a great look~IF~your ceilings are in excellent shape. It will show more flaws that a flat finish. If you go with white, try doing your trim in white too, it will really make your tan color look great! IF you do decide to go with the color though~start with your white paint, and just add in small amounts of the tan paint that you are using, a very small amount at a time, until you get the shade you like. Don't forget that it will dry darker!! So be careful:) About the border..alot of people mess around with taping things off with painters tape (The blue tape)..I have better luck just using a really good, chiseled/angled 1" to 1 1/2" brush to get up as close as you can and then an artists brush for spots you can't get to. Just keep a wet, thin rag handy, and wipe off any paint you get on the border as you go along.

No ceiling colors are in I am sorry I don't agree with the pro You should go 1 to 2 shades lighter so the height of the ceiling will look taller Is the boarder white is it paper if this is the case you may want to leave the ceiling white to avoid all that extra work of painting a boarder

I've seen ultra-upscale ceilings that were 10% as strong as the jewel-toned walls.
I like gloss ceilings bcs they stay cleaner. However, your husband has a point; white ceilings reflect more light. The traditional flat white ceiling is very comfortable in any setting.
Unless it is a very pale color, don't use wall color for ceilings; it is fairly depressing in effect by being too dark.
Cream or bone should look fine for the trim.

ceiling colors are very in ... even a darker shade if you watch the home shows ....
