People think the way that their favorite celebrity tells them. I personally joined so I could blow stuff up. It was awesome. Oh, and I did not come from a poor background.

My husband was in the military and I have other family mebers in the military. People join for many reasons, but what we found to be the main reasons were a little disturbing and some down right terrifying!
There are a lot of people that go because its that or jail time we found out (that is a form of draft I think). Then there are others that do it because they don't know what they want to do and hope to find direction. Others go in for disiple, some for the work experience. While others do it for the Montgomery GI Bill. SOme go in because its been a long standing family tradition.
Now what was really scary is to find out what our elite are made up of... while in training, they ask if anyone has done certain types of crimes. It appeared the more dangerous the acts, the moredaring the peole are the quicker they were to be recruited for jobs like the Navy Seals. It was explained to us, these are the people that don't fear consiquinces...
now that is scary to me
Have a GREAT day

My husband is in the Army and I support him 110%!
Only poor people in the Military? Hardly! I HAVE met soldiers who joined, during peace-time, for the college money. In my humble opinion, they mislead THEMSELVES into thinking that they could get in, grab a pile of cash, and get out. My husband joined out of a desire to serve his country, and it's been a privilege for him to do so.
The entire officer corps is college educated, a degree is a prerequisite for commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. Just look at the military academies....West Point, Citadel, Naval academy.... They're colleges that basically offer a 4 year degree in exchange for a minimum of a 4 year military commission. You tell me how many college students today can pay their loans off in 4 years.
I have a son with special needs......The military medical system has gone out of it's way to treat and care for him. All of it is free because my hubby's in the military, we'd have been dropped by any other health coverage carrier on the planet if we were on the 'civilian' side long ago. In my own estimation, our military health plan has paid over $,1,000,000 for his care so far, because they DO care about supporting soldier's AND their families.

Brian Tillman joined and left his pro football career behind to fight for his country. Others who could be and are very successful in the private sector join to fight. The line : only the poor join because they have no where else to go is just a line made up to trick people.

Obviously Kathy is uninformed about the brave young men and women who join the military. Not all are from poor families. I think she needs to do some research before spouting off on a topic she obviously knows nothing about.

I am joining and I am far from poor. The same can be said about EVERYONE else I know that joined.
And just for the record, THE DRAFT IS NOT COMING BACK.

Of course. Everyone knows that, and statistics prove it. It's time to open your eyes!
Army recruiters target the poors, often jobless people and promise them a good salary and good condition. These will be the "fighters" put in the most dangerous situations.
More educated people will get safer positions. For them the army often offers better pay for similar qualifications. That's why they join!

i've heard that opinion a lot of our military. and it's really ignorant to think that about people who volunteer to serve their country and who protect our freedoms.
sure there are a lot of people who join up because it's a good way out of their current living situation to improve themselves.
also a lot of folks who have served in the military are highly educated and went on to pursue education after military service. and then there's those who are career military who are very intelligent without even any higher education.
i really respect those in the military -- past, present and future. there's no reason for anyone to insult them and put them down.

I think this is a prime example of what a person wants to believe rather than seeking out information. There are quite a few of my family members who are serving, doing their tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, not a single one of them did it for any reason other than to serve their country. They're all middle-class, educated people who could have done something else if they'd have chosen to.

Just remember that a lot of those guys that are going to Harvard or Yale have a military commitment to fulfill when they graduate. That is because the military is forking out the bucks that most think their "rich" families are forking out.
