Classic. Something slow, Morris Minor 1000, negative depreciation if looked after, even economic on fuel round town, especially if you upgrade the engine with later parts like 1300 Ital exhaust manifold and MG Metro inlet manifold, and HIF carb. this needs work with an angle grinder and hacksaw but well worth it. Stick with the 1098cc engine though, the 1300 will break the gearbox.
Actually an MGB GT is probably a viable cheapie these days, especially a pre 72 Tax free example, lets face it the street cred of a BMW 3 series or Porker at a fraction of the cost. heavy on fuel in town, 30 mpg on motorway, but negative depreciation if you look after it. Worth considering.

Something like a 107 or a c1 something with a small engine to start with. I passed my test last week and i decided to spring for a vauxhall corsa which ended up pretty cheap to run and insure.
Small engine is the key. 1 litre up to 1.2 is what to look for.

well, my first car at 17 was a peugeot 106, its a 1ltr engine, so petrol costs are low, and its cheap insurance and tax. i now have a peugeot 206, which is 1.1 engine maybe, and its still cheap to run, with low insurance and tax. other good cars are vauxhall corsa, renault clio, anything which is less than 1.2ltr.

stay away from sport cars. the best car for your buck is a economy car. If you live in the city compared to the suburbs, be prepared to pay more. always shop around for different insurance premiums..

It's odivously a citroen 2cv without a doubt assuming your in the uk, don't buy a hummer ever unless you have a holiday home in bagdad.

if you want a cheap to run car and that is your only criteria.....
a smart car.....60-70mpg
v.low insurance and road fund licence.
but not very cool
