My friend is cutting my hair. She is going to put short lays in my hair that comes down to my shoulder blades. First off do you think that will look good? How short should the layer be?

How do they cut them, with a raor? Do they just pick up some hair and start cutting it shorter?

what do you think about dying the bottom layers a darker color? Not extravagant but subtle?

Just so you know, I have an oval shaped face. I am also a lillte over weight. I have really pale skin. I know those things ccome into play when picking a hair style.

Don't make the layers very short or it will make your face look fat. Cut in long layers (top layer about 4 to 5 inches) If your hair is fine, cut with a razor - if it is on the coarse side, use scissors. The easiest way to put in layers is to bend over with your head upside down and cut straight across. This will give you layers all over and is very simple. This is the way I would suggest you do it if your friend has no experience cutting hair. I think the color would be o.k. as long as it's only a shade or two darker than your original color. Don't go too dark.

layers are great, the first layer should be little past your ear, I think layers look good on all hair. Razor gives the layers a better look kinda choppy. I like when people with light hair do the underneath with a dark color but not really vice versa. I have brown hair and tried red underneath it was okay but only lasted a few weeks. Also streaks would look good too a little lighter than your color and a little darker

I have long hair and have an oval head as well, yesterday I got layers throughout my hair, and well they left my long hair but they did lots of short layers in the front as well- it looks pretty good. A while back I got the bottom of my hair lighter not darker and well I liked it, at least for a while, then I ended up dying it all black lol.

Putting layers into longer hair give it movement and interest and allows it to frame the face better. Longer, single dimensional hair is boring and uninteresting and sometimes can just look like a flat blanket.

the cut sounds great - not so sure about the colour - they do it with either a razor or scissors and they dont just start anywhere
