everyone is different. yes, people DO fall asleep sometimes during tattoos, and no that doesn't mean they passed out. depending on where you get it at, it can be very relaxing. i am not only speaking as someone with a lot of tattoos, but i am a tattoo artist so i have tattooed a lot of people and EVERYONE is different, even people who have gotten tattoos in the same area react different. it's not good to go get a tattoo completely worried out of your mind because that will increase your likelyhood of moving and that's not too fun for the artist.
anyway, i don't know if you meant shoulder as in shoulder blade, like on your back, or shoulder as in the ball of your shoulder on your upper arm. the shoulder blade hurts slightly more then the arm. the upper arm is almost painless. it was to me anyway, but it seems to be the general consensus.
i have my arms tattooed, shoulder to wrist, it hurts more the lower you go down, but it's not unbearable. i have my whole upper back tattooed, shoulder to shoulder and down to my mid back and up to the back of my neck. that was the only tattoo i can honestly say kind of hurt, but it shouldn't have, i had a heavy handed artist because i also have my ribs tattooed from right under my armpit down to my hip and it only hurt in certain spots but over all wasn't bad at all. i have my legs tattooed from my knew to my ankle and that really didn't hurt at all. some spots even felt like a deep tissue massage. i also have my knuckles done which didn't hurt the first time, but hurt a little more when i got them touched up, but again, it didn't hurt enough that i really cared. i'm a thin guy so i usually tell people that if i can take it, they can take it. of course that's not nessesarily true because everyone's pain tolerance is different, and i guess mine is just high. but the point is, you'll live. it's really not that bad, and it is addictive. your body releases endorphines and adrenaline while getting tattooed so that helps with the pain, plus once it's done you probably won't even remember how bad it hurt, so you'll want more.
just make sure that when you go and get it done you are mentally prepared. once they start, there's no stopping. i hope you do go through with it, because i'm sure you really want to and obviously it means a lot to you. i wish you the best of luck and you'll do great, i'm sure of it!

I have 3 rather large tattoos going across my shoulders, and they were by far the LEAST painful ones to get...I almost fell asleep during one of them LOL......But mind you I'm comparing this to getting them on my foot and behind my ears, but still shoulder should be fine it literally just feels like a cat scratch or bad sunburn....From what you're describing it sounds like you're going to get something smaller, I wouldn't worry about the pain, honestly after about 3 minutes your adrenaline kicks in, and you can't feel much. The only thing that happens to me is I get sort of shakey, but thats due to the large amounts of adrenaline being pumped through my system, that or cause my tat artist is absolutely gorgeous!
Either way good luck, I wouldn't worry about the pain, if you really want it that bad, the pain shouldn't be that big of an issue!

I'm a very skinny person, which, "thin skin", as the person who did my tattoo said, on a personal experience the tattoo did hurt.
Everyone is different though and the location will drastically change the amount of pain also.
I had it done on my upper back between both shoulders. It was a tribal tattoo around the size of a index card.
On a scale of 1-10, the pain was around a 7. I'm not trying to scare you, just telling you what I felt. I wish someone had told me that. lol.
But overall its very satisfying after you get it, so I guess it's worth it.
Oh, it didn't hurt at all after I got it and the pain almost went away as soon as it was done.
Good luck!

I have 3 tattoos one on my shoulder, one on my breast, and one on my ankle. All were done by different artists and all 3 hurt. It was not unbearable pain. My shoulder one hurt when the artist got closer to the spine; less in fleshier areas. The one on my breast hurt pretty bad because the woman who did it was a bit heavy handed and the one on my ankle wasn't that bad.
All in all it depends greatly on your pain threashold and how the artist has his machines tuned. I'd put the pain on a level with a bee sting and through the healing process if feels about like a sunburn. It is uncomfortable but not excruciating.

Your shoulder shouldn't hurt too bad. Tattoos are like a scratching, burning sensation. Not too bad unless you get it somewhere near the bone.
And honey, my guess is if you've had three kids, you can handle any kind of pain!

I am getting a portrait tattoo of my daughter done in 2 weeks - in terms of being scared of the pain...yes, I am scared as well. I have a needle phobia (pretty crazy to even think of getting a tattoo then huh) ...BUT the thing that is pushing me is the fact that i know that I want this tattoo and it's of the most important thing in the world to me...my daughter. So, even if it hurts, I'm going to suck it up and get it because I really want it and I really want to have that special thing tattooed on me.
When I first made the decision to get one...the pain factor was really driving me away as well....I had to book the appt 6 months in advance because of the artist I'm going to. I took approx a year to really think about the design and draw it out. I was kind of scared about the anticipation and was going back and forth before making the appt....
After making the appt, I used the time to really learn about tattoos, the process, safety procedures, pain factor, anything and everything basically...Now that I know all of that about the tattoo and it's approaching...in some sense for me, knowledge was the best and I'm quite excited about it rather than scared. Yes, I'm apprehensive about the pain, but I want this tattoo and I'm wiling to put up with the discomfort for it. My tattoo is taking 1.5-2 hrs....so I think of it this way....a short amount of time of discomfort BUT a great and meaningful piece of art on me that represents my love for my daughter. I am having a friend who is inked come with me and we're going to go out to dinner and then off to the tattoo studio!
Best of luck in your decision!

It will hurt a little more than getting it on the lower arm but everyone is different so u can never tell.I have one on my shoulder, and one on my arm (didn't hurt at all) one on my lower leg (hurt like hell) and the shoulder wasin between, go ahead if u really want one but it is true that they're addictive, you'll want more even if it hurts. Good luck

Yes it hurts, ANYWHERE you put it. I have 7 tats and I have them on both shoulders. My shoulder was my very 1st spot. It hurts the worse at first, because they outline it. When they get to the filling it in part, it's not so bad.
It does hurt, but I love mine, and if done right, it'll be a very prized possession. Good luck!

sounds pretty. it doesnt hurt that bad! it hurts more on bonier parts of the body, like spine, ankle etc. i dont think shoulder would be that bad? be worth it it the end though! once they start with the outline of the tattoo thats the worse bit, then they colour it in, but by then you would have got used to the pain. your be fine.
