Get your dog to the vet asap. I have had shar-pei, and because of their wrinkles, they can develop entropian. This is a condition where the eye lids curl under. The hair, rubbing on the cornea, can result in blindness. If this is the problem, your dog probably has so much irritation that an infection has already set in. The condition is easily corrected by putting in a temporary stitch which lifts the eyelid so the hair will not irritate the eye. Sometimes a fold of the lid must be surgically removed...easily done since they've so many creases in the lid anyway and no visible scars result. I've had one litter of shar-pei where all six pups had the eye tacking (temporary stitch) and one had to have the eye surgery as an adult.

Hi Andrea s!!
It sounds more likely to be a infection in his eye. He will need to see the Vet for this as Dog's eyes are very delicate.
Meanwhile bathe his eye with a cold, wet teabag 4 times a day and this may help soothe away and itching or discomfort but it will not make a big improvement unfortunately.
The consistency of the discharge often helps determine its cause. Usually infections caused by bacteria, fungi, etc., create a thick yellow or greenish eye discharge. The eyelids may actually stick together when held shut. This results from the accumulation of white blood cells or 'pus' excreted into the area in an effort to fight off the infection. This type of discharge is also typical of a condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or 'dry eye,' in which insufficient tears are produced. Allergies, on the other hand, generally cause a clear or watery discharge. Regardless of the cause, a patient with conjunctivitis will often squint and/or keep the third eyelid partially covering the eyeball. Conjunctivitis is often painful, causing a dog to paw at or rub the eye against objects such as your leg or the carpet.
Also, do not expose the dogs to high UV light ie: bright sunlight and snow as it will irritate the eye.
Good luck at the Vet.

Your dog may well have entropian where the eyelashes turn inwards, if left they can cause ulcers on the eye leading to blindness. If it is a shar-pei this is the most likely cause even if eyes have been tacked as a puppy.

This breed has lots of health problems, particularly with eyes & skin: http://www.kavishi.freeserve.co.uk/sharpeihealthproblems.htm
He may need some eye surgery - most have an eye tacking as pups, many need a second surgery as adults.
