I am a single working mother with 2 children. My son (the 1st grader) is at times very happy, but spent christmas with his dad (the only days I can get him to spend time with my son) and he came back very sad and wanting to live with his dad. Any ideas? I dont want to get him upset with his dad or show I am, but he desperately needs cheering.

oh what a terrible situation. It breaks my heart to see families split up..... then again its worse if your together fighting allt he time..rite?...

I give you a lot of credit for not wanting your son to be upset with his fater, even though you are. My mother was the same way--but my father was always in jail...still, she always let me know that he loved me and such.

Maybe you could try to talk to his dad (even though your not happy with him.).... tell his father how upset your son is and that maybe once a week he can take him out places. Your son probably knows that just becuase he saw daddy on christmas, doesnt mean that he's going to see him any time soon again.

If you could work something out with his father, you could tell your son that he cant live with daddy but that he can spend more time with him. ---- i know how it is though. Maybe if his father isnt willing to make this change for the long term--you're son could get dissapointed. You'll never know until you try it out.

as for right now, show him that he can have a great time with mommy too!!.... you dont need to do this by spending loads of money ...you dont want to teach your son that material objects make everything okay. But maybe you two could do something together that he loves. Does he like to swim? ...in my area it is FREEZING outside right now, but i took my little brother swimming at an indoor pool the other day...he had a BLAST! ..and it was only two dollars per person without a memberhsip. Or you could go for a walk together, a bike ride, go see a movie, rent a movie and make a "movie theater" at home. .... go to a park/playground.....running around and being active is a great way to get out anger and fusterations...and it relives stress. Though hes a small child, he does have stress.

I have 3 siblings.... 5years old, 6 years old, and 7 years old. Those are all things that we try doing with them when we notice that their mood is a little down. It usualy lifts their spirits.

Good luck with this...i hope everything works out. And please dont feel bad about this. Just becuase your son says he wants to live with daddy does not mean that he does not love you. He probably just greatly misses his father. When I was younger I'd see my father maybe twice a year.... those days that I spent with him, i never wanted it to end---becuase I knew it would be such a long time before i saw him again. Its not your fault. Dont put yourself down, and remember..he loves you too!!!

Find out SPECIFICALLY what it is that he liked so much at Dad's.

One thing that helps sadness of all kinds is reaching out to someone or something else. Is there an elderly neighbor he can make a small gift for?

Also, when you are a first grader, some extra time on the monkey bars and running like an idiot can be very therapeutic. I wish it was so easy now....

Aww... well find out why he had fun with his dad, and if possible try and work out some more time for him to spend there (I know that may be stretching but still) In the meantime, do nice little things for him and make sure your home is a place he would want to be (no yelling, etc.)
