I thought Jesus was supposed to be the son of god? Not god himself. Didn't god say not to worship anything other than him? I thought Jesus was just a prophet spreading the word of god, but so many people say that Jesus IS god. I don't see how this can be true. Wouldn't that make Jesus his own father?

By the way, I'm an atheist so I really have no idea why people do consider Jesus to be God. So this IS a serious question and people don't need to be grouchy or snippy with me about it.

I don't believe in either. I believe that jesus could have been a person, but not some sort of holy person.
And it's like you're saying jesus is god by the transistive property. ie "I touched this girl's hand. Her hand has touched her boob. Therefore by the transitive property I got boob." --American Dad.

I know that this can be confusing. Before I became a Christian I did not understand it either. And to be perfectly honest it is hard to really understand it all even as a Christian- that is where faith comes in. To unbelievers "Faith can be a cop out" so I will try to explain this as best I can. God is Three in One- Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When Jesus was on the earth- He said that the Father and I are one and whoever has seen Me has seen the Father. In Philippians 2 it talks about Jesus coming to earth and laying aside His divinity- even though He was still God- to become human. This is a very elementary thought but here goes anyway- think of an egg- there is a shell, there is a yoke and there is the white part of the egg- but all parts are still an egg. Also I am a wife, a mom and a musician, but I am still just one person. That is not the best explaination but it is how we can try to grasp the truth. If Jesus was not God then His Sacrifice would have been for nothing. A prophet cannot die on the cross for the sins of the world- and then rise from the dead to give eternal life to all who believe. Hope this helps.

The only way to answer this question is to tell you about what the Bible says. I know you don't except that so what can I say...
Christians hold that Jesus Himself claimed to be the God that spoke to Moses from the burning bush. He called Himself "I AM". We are also told that "In the beginning Jesus was there and He was God from all eternity. That He made all things. By that definition Jesus is God. But you are correct Jesus prayed to the Father calling Him God. Then later the Apostles called a third being (The Holy Spirit) God... 3 Gods? No the Old Testament and Jesus Himself was clear on that subject... "Hear oh Israel the Lord our God the Lord is One.. Three separate beings one God... That's where the doctrine of the Trinity came from. This may be hard for you to except but you don't have to you just wanted it explained.... Jim

The simplest way to put it is that like a person with multiple personalities has distinct purpose, personality, and even a different job; well, God is three persons that have distinctly different jobs. Within God is God the Father who sits on the throne as the Most High and the number one source of power who gave power to Jesus the Son of Man; also we have The Son who came down to earth to die so that anyone that believes in Him and God will be saved and not go to hell; and we have the Holy Ghost or Spirit which is the spirit of The Son that has been given to those who believe starting after Jesus died and went up into Heaven to prepare a place for us.

It is one of the greatest mystery that I think no one can fully understand the true essence of the Trinity concept - God is three-in-one. The bible teaches that God the Father, God the Son & God the Holy Spirit, are three persons of the same God. It can only be accepted by faith as it is beyond human understand to appreciate the concept.
If you read the gospel of John chapter 14, Jesus' disciples Thomas & Philip asked similar questions and this is how Jesus had answered them. "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake."
In essence, the gospels had also quite clearly indicated that Jesus is the Son of God, as well as that He is God Himself. As the concept of the Trinity is difficult to explain & understood, some had used the following analogy, though extremely crude, to explain the Trinity: H2O, commonly known as water, is able to exist in three different states ( vapor, liquid, ice ) at the same time, yet its basic composition in all three states is 2 parts of hydrogen and 1 part of oxygen. Although it is rather inappropriate to use such an analogy to describe God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, it is the closest possible association that our limited human mind can accept and understand.

First, one can not answer theology using logic :)
Your question can trace it's origins in the early days of Christianity, when it was a cult in the Roman Empire. The concepts of homoousion and homoiousion were prevalent and led to cantankerous discussions until Constantine resolved to patch the two sides at Nicea.
Homoousios means "made of the same substance," refering to God, the father and Jesus, the son. The other faction, contended that the relationship between God and Jesus was that of homoiousion, that is, "made of similar substance."
People that believe that Jesus _is_ God believe in homoousion as they believe that both are the same.

Jesus was the very first creation OF Jehovah, who is the eternal father. They worked together creating all things, probably starting with the angels.
Jesus became "A" God when he died for the sins of mankind to be forgiven. It from his father, Jehovah, was his reward for giving up his earthly life.
It's all in the bible, but you have to know where to look. Do it with a friend. Not only more fun, but you'll learn more. You can get help from the link below.......The friends are waiting to help you.
P/S The trinity exists only in the minds of catholics

Jesus is the word. And the word of God is Jesus. When God created the universe, Jesus was already there with the father. The universe was created specially for Jesus.

Based on all the statements made by Jesus and all the miracles that many people witnessed Him do, Jesus would have to be one of three things, a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord. Take your pick. I believe in my heart that He is the Lord.

Because Heavenly Father is Jesus' Father, he has the divine part that lets him do what is needed as a god. He was given certain assignments to fulfill by Heavenly Father, and is acting in the name of Heavenly Father when he carries out those assignments.

Jesus is God because if you don't believe in Jesus you don't believe in God. You have to believe in both. And God did send his only son to die for us and that's why we have Easter. Have you heard of: The Father, Son, and The Holy Spirit?? Well that means they're all one. So if you're going to believe, you believe both.
