I have had three root canals and they did not hurt much. The cost is about $1000 - 1500 dollars depending on the tooth. This price includes the crown. Most insurances pay for half. In my area the dentists are big into "sedation dentistry" where they actually put you out. You are asleep and it is great. The cost for sedation is about 200.00 and well worth it. Good luck!

When I go to the dentist for a root canal-like I am this morning....Im actually looking forward to it. Im going to get it fixed and get rid of the pain. I dont like the shots so much and dont like coming out the numbness....the tooth pain is gone, but the jaw area is sore. Have them suggest or prescribe something.
A root canal is when they drill a big hole in your tooth, like for a filling, only they drill a little deeper to take the dead nerve out of the root - the nerve looks like a little peice of string, less than a half inch long.
To do this procedure, they may just go in your mouth and do it, or use a rubber dam. It depends on the dentist. I dont really care for it, but sometimes its necessary, depending on where the tooth is located.
The rubber dam is a peice of rubber, like 2 x 3 inches..they put this around a small, metal, wire recutangular shaped frame, and stretch the rubber over it-like a mini trampoline. They cut a little hole in it for your tooth and put your tooth thru the hole-thus, mashing everything else under the rubber trampoline.
This way, its a clean, dry area for the Dentist to work in, rather than all the mess...that's all under the rubber dam, and they just see the tooth. Its a little uncomfortable, but just make sure your bottom lip isnt between the dam and your bottom teeth..if they lay their hand on it-OWCH!
After they drill it and possibly put the rubber dam in, they clean the area out with a soultion containing bleach-you'll smell it and go "oh my god.....what the? bleach?" dont worry, its safe, they do it all the time, it reminds me of laundry.
Then, they need to clean the sides of the area where the little string of nerve was, its very small, they can not use an electric drill like they do for a filling. They use something like a wire, that is kind of scruffy to scrub it, get it? Anyway, they take that in their fingers and clean up the inside of the root-they will go thru a few of those.
Then they put tiny stick looking things in there to kind of fill it up. I dont know if it has cement or what on it, but then they fill the tooth and maybe crown it.
Usually after a root canal, they put a crown on the tooth..at least in my case. That is a cap or a new outside covering for the tooth to protect it. I have many in my mouth, including a gold one-its in the back, it was a couple hundred less than the ones that are enamaled to match your teeth.
Well, good luck and take care! Dont worry too much, just remember to relax, breathe and focus on something in the room-or your Dentist's eyebrows...I always think that's a funny position to be in...so close to someone's face!! Make sure you blow your nose and pluck your eyebrows! Ha!!!!

Personally I would just have the tooth pulled, because root canals, on me, anyway, have failed. They remove the top(or sides of the tooth) and remove the 'innards' the nerves, etc. Then yyou have to go back like two or three times, which I couldn't stand... I just say pull it, and it's over with. I don't like dentists either. I figure if I have all my teeth out I won't have to go as often LOL!!

i had root cannal treatment when i was a kid and i am sorry to say the experience put me off dentists for life. but that is beacuse local anithestics(sp) dont work on me. if you're normal with locals then you will be fine
It involves drilling thru the tooth to remove the root of the problem tooth - doesnt take too long and dentists now are more sympathetic to your pain and will stop if it hurts you to give more pain relife.
dont let my experience put you off. have fun and let us know how it goes

it actual relies upon if the enamel is interior the front of your mouth or interior the returned. Root canals at the instant are not plenty exciting yet once you prefer to maintain that enamel that's the appropriate thank you to bypass. yet there is no assure that's going to final considering one can unfastened that enamel from bone unfastened or different issues. in comparison to pulling the enamel, after that's pulled that's over aside from a sprint discomfort and swelling. then you rather can placed on a flipper if that works for you or get a implant.Take it from me, i be responsive to the way you experience approximately Dentist yet in comparison to you, I paintings with them and that i nonetheless get frightened of them. in case you think of the hollow area is to important which you will have the muse canal achieved, get it pulled.

I've only had one root canal, and it didn't hurt. But I've known other people who had them and they hurt quite a bit. I don't know why.
