When someone asks a question about a mixed breed dog, why do you attack them? To me it just seems mean spirited, no better than racism. Why can't someone enjoy a dog regardless of what breed or mixed breed it is? (I know I know, the overpopulation of dogs in shelters) But to be honest, there have been articles of shelters actually getting dogs from out of their area because there aren't enough to keep it going... isn't the idea to put a shelter out of business (ie get all of the dogs a home), not have it outsource homeless dogs from other areas? I'm sure I will get some negative feed back for this one... but just from those "dog racists". I think I made my point.

Look, already a negative feedback. (imagine that) Thanks to all of you that give valueable input (regardless of whether or not you agree) some of you make very good points without attacking or giving negative feedback. These are the people that need to be heard, those who can make a point without being mean spirited... those who genuinely care and aren't out to trash everyone who thinks differently than them.

I love dogs - purebred or mixed breeds - and have owned many of both.
What I ATTACK about are the ignorant people on here who want to purposely BREED 'designer dogs' AKA "Mutts For Money" - which is only to make money for themselves, and takes homes away from mixed breeds in shelters, thus dooming them.
The other thing that is annoying is all the people repeating the myth that mutts are healthier & live longer. I worked for vets & know firsthand this is untrue, and no vet believes this, either. We had Beagle/Sheltie mixes with epilepsy, Rottweiler/German Shepherd/ Labrador mixes with severe hip dysplasia, mixes with diabetes, cataracts, heart defects, & so on. A dog that is half St. Bernard, half Great Dane will live about as long as those breeds do - about 8-10 years. Genetics will & can not make some miraculous leap to keep them alive 15+ years, just because they are mixed.
I also don't like when people try to bully others to get a shelter dog when they have done their research & want a particular breed. If someone wants the small size, personality, low-shedding & low-allergy benefits of a Miniature Schanuzer, getting an unknown mix from a shelter that grows up to be a large, shedding, dander-covered dog is NOT going to meet their needs, and may end up surrendered back to the shelter - where, as an adult, it will have little chance of being re-homed.
People need to get real.

It's not a Mutt vs Purebred issue, but rather an issue of "designer" mutts being delibrately bred by people and then being sold for $$$$ most often higher then that of a well bred purebred.
It is a myth that mixes are healthier or more even tempered then purebreds etc...mixes have just as many problems with both health and temperament as purebreds...hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart & kidney issues, allergies....biting, hyperactivity, timid, aggressive.... As a veterianry tech I see the health problems all the time as a long time trainer I see the temperament & behavior issues.
In reality only 10% of all purebreds should even be bred. There are way to many irrespaonible breeders of both purebreds and mixes...they only care about $$$$ and not what they produce..they breed because they can. They give no regard to health, temperament, breed standard and pedigree(in purebreds). People really need to learn responsible breeding practices BEFORE they breed anything.

Some people think that you have to spend a bunch ofmoney for a great dog I have owned both "muts" and purebreds to me it doesn't matter what kind of dog it is I get enough hassle because mine are both American Pit Bull Terriers the looks I get could kill. People just don't care and the dogs suffer a dog give unconditional love I have seen dogs from abused homes and these dogs fight so hard to live it is sad. All they wnt is to be loved . Point Made you have a great post.

It isn't usually an attack on the person that owns a mixed breed. It is just outrage against so called breeders who breed them and sell them for big bucks and make people think they are getting some kind of exotic breed, instead of a mutt. It is fine for the people who want a mutt, but they should rescue one out of a shelter instead of lining the pockets of the BYB selling them.

My current dog is a mixed breed that I got from the animal shelter and she is a great friend. She's protective but gentle and friendly. My grandkids love to play with her because she is such a gentle dog.
I'm sure she's part black lab and some Rottweiler but have no idea what else.
There's nothing wrong with moving pets from one shelter to another if it increases the chance that they will find a happy home. Its far better than the animals being put down for lack of room.

I have four dogs with only one of them being a pure breed. I love my mutts just as much as my full blood. I have never heard of a shelter getting dogs from other shelters though. I agree with you when you say the idea should be to find all dogs in shelters a home and put them out of business.....great idea! Mutts make WONDERFUL pets!!

Ok you must be referring to some Q&A that I missed. I gather the dispute is about mutts vs. pure?
Many breeds are not that new anyway. How were they created? By mixing! For example the Australian shepherd was created in the US by mixing certain working dogs. What's pure? What's not? What's accepted as a breed by CKC may not be accepted by AKC. Who cares? People shouldn't try to live their lives through their dogs.

it is not racism - it is just so sad to see millions of unwanted dogs being put to sleep needlessly,,,, statistics seem to show that when someone pays for a purebred puppy they are more apt to to spend time on training their "investment" as opposed to someone stopping by a shelter on a saturday afternoon and seeing some poor dog in there, adopting it without prior thought and then deciding that poor little cute pup is alot of work - so they end up surrendering it again ........ noting that they have nothing to lose,.... it is just sad.. of course there are exceptions to this rule . ahh i don't know,,, i just believe the majority of mixed breed dogs are the result of irresponsible pet owners and by adopting these dogs we are almost promoting this behavior - sorry to have offended you in anyway

i'm not sure who you're directing your question to, but for the record, i'll take a mixed breed over a purebred anyday. almost no genetic faults. and as long as there are irresponsible owners who don't get their pets spayed, ther will always be a need for shelters. and its not the breed that counts, but people do need to evaluate there home and personal habits before they run out to get a dog. and regardless of breed, the dog needs to fit into their lives. an apartment dweller in ny doesn't want to get a st bernard.
