how do i tell a family member that they have a problem with their personal hygiene without offending them? I am due to go to a family gathering soon and a close member of my family will be there. but they are unable to get upstairs to shower and they have a very bad odour that follows them around. i have bought the subject up on several occasions but this person has not taken the hint. i feel guilty about saying anything but i feel that if i dont say anything someone else will and they wont be very diplomatic. please help

You can just tell him that he is having a bad body odour, when you are alone with him and that he must do something about it. Just be short and stop at this one line. If he goes into detail or try to probe why you said it, just tell him that you felt the smell and just told them so that they can do something about it.

If they are unable to get to the shower, then there must be some physical issue involved. If thats the case, then it's time to start investigating in-home care for this person.

go to Bath and Body Works and load up on hygiene products and present them as a gift. Just make a gift basket and insist they use it right away to let you know how the stuff works.

Hand this person some deoderant, or talk to them alone. They might feel insulted or angry at first, but explain to that person that it would be much more embarrasing for a lot of people to smell this person.
